Whether you love her or hate her, Rachael Ray, the Food Network's biggest star, is here to stay. Although 2008 was filled with many ups and downs, it was a huge year for Ray. Things got off to a rocky start in January, when a secondhand story claimed that Ray, a Dunkin' Donuts spokeswoman, refused to drink Dunkin's coffee, instead opting for Starbucks. A week later, Ray denied the claim as "absolutely ridiculous." In February, Ray happily hosted the wildly popular Burger Bash at the South Beach Wine and Food Festival, but March brought worries that her daytime television talk show would not be renewed. However, these rumors were quickly squashed when reports showed that her viewership was growing.
The weirdest bombshell came in May when Michelle Malkin, a conservative commentator, accused Ray of supporting terrorists in a Dunkin' Donuts ad. The donut chain pulled the ad and released a statement clarifying that Rachael was simply wearing a stylish scarf and not a traditional headdress sometimes associated with terrorists.
Ray rose above the controversy to win a daytime Emmy for Outstanding Talk Show. In July she rolled out a line of pet food called Nutrish, and in early August Forbes named her the world's richest chef. The week before bringing the Burger Bash to New York City's first-ever Wine and Food festival, Ray revealed her plans to open a hamburger restaurant. Since then, Ray has laid low. She recently had throat surgery to get rid of her raspy voice and is currently taking some time off to recover.
What did you think about Ray's turbulent year? Will she continue to make headlines in 2009?

I like ray, I have enjoyed watching her since the early days on the food network. I wish her the best!
1I can't stand her. She's always been super annoying;
2As much as some people think RR is annoying, I don't think she'll be going anywhere anytime soon.
3I used to really dislike her, but now I sort of enjoy her. I didn't realize you could get surgery to change your voice though.
4I really love her. She's fun to watch and really passionate about what she does. I didn't know about the throat surgery for her voice, either. Hopefully she's well soon!
5okay has anyone noticed that on the past several issues of her magazines that her eyebrows look horrible? sometimes she even looks like groucho marx. she's okay, i could take her or leave her.
6I don't mind her, and I have to say I really like a lot of her recipes, they've turned into a lot of my standard go to dinners.
7I'm glad to see others like her! I can't watch too much of her on TV, but I could read her magazines for hours. My best every-night recipes are from her magazine.
8I love 30 Minute Meals--she's so fun. Also, the surgery was not to change her voice, it was to deal with a cyst on her vocal cord. Although now the surgery has been postponed due to successful therapy. Here's the story:

Also, I really prefer her hair longer. I think the shorter length makes her body proportions look weird...
9She used to annoy the crap out of me, but then I discovered she actually does have some great ideas and now I love her!
10i liked her when she was new to the food network and now i just can't stand her. she makes my ears hurt - and it's not just her voice (which i now understand will be different) it's the way that she talks. it's just annoying!
it's great that she's seen this kind of success - but well - i'm over her!
11It still cracks me up that anyone would believe that Rachael Ray was a Terrorist :ROFTL: I still find the chick annoying as hell though with her yummooo and her EVOO.
12Tell her to take as much time off as she needs. More, if she has any doubts.
13Love RR - she's having a cyst removed, not her voice changed. Her hair is shorter cause she had a Michael Jackson moment at her birthday bash at Food Network. Her hair caught on fire from the candles. Plus I love the fact she's so happy with her life and it makes everyone else so miserable. YUM-O, EVOO, SAMMIES - long live RR!
14I'm with shoneyjoe on this one!
15I like Rachael Ray! I hope her throat heals soon...she had a polyp on her voicebox that was giving her the raspy voice, so she's having it removed. Luckily it's just a benign growth and nothing more serious. I'm also glad her talk show's being renewed because I'm sort of addicted to it, lol!
16You know, I used to like her, but she is completely hyped out of control now and frankly I don't get the fame!
17I love Rachael Ray! I basically learned how to cook from watching her shows and following the easier recipes. I'm trying to branch out into more difficult things, but her recipes can just be so great to throw together at the end of a long day. And I really like her magazine and talk show. She's so cute!
18RR is here to stay. I like her, in small doses. Her show is entertaining if you watch it once or twice a week. Watching over twice a week will having you saying "I KNOW..."
19lexi,
Watching that show more than twice per week will have a person attempting to pop their eyeballs (and ear drums) out with a spork!
20I have a love hate relationship with RR. I can't stand to watch her shows, but I do love some of her recipes... so I buy her cookbooks and surf Food Network for her recipes.
And like everyone else... RR will be here for a long while.
21Love RR. Her recipes are good and easy.
22I secretly like her...
23Actually, according to her blog she'll just need vocal therapy and not surgery. (Unless I'm reading it wrong) Just click on the link included in the story.
24I used to have the same problems with my vocal chords. Thankfully I never had to have surgery. I'm not a big fan of RR. Her recipes are good though.
