Hoppin' John Salad
This Southern New Year's Day staple — which has been lightened in the form of a salad — purportedly brings good luck to all those who eat it. Introduced by African slaves working the plantations, it is said that a man named John came "hoppin'" to the table when his wife cooked up this dish.
