In your attempt to get organized in the New Year, perhaps I can interest you in this birthday cake mold. Not only does it save you the time and effort of having to write "Happy Birthday John Doe," but the microwave-safe silicon mold — heatproof up to 300ºF — has a recipe embossed on the rim for a cake that's ready in a mere six minutes! Procrastinators may think it's worth the $39.50 price tag, but I wonder whether traditionalists will miss spelling out "Happy Birthday" in loopy pink icing.

I like it- the cake looks so yummy, too.
The part with the words would end up being so dry and hard when baked. Yuck.
Oooh, I like.
i love that - i ' never thought about it before but it's a really cute idea. knowing that you're going to make lots of birthday cakes over the years, and you don't always want the heavy icing ones, this is a GREAT alternative.
I think it's cute. Could you imagine trying to ice that cake if someone wanted it iced? It'd be a bear.
I seen this at www.perpetualkid.com an awesome website with all kinds of cool stuff.
I like this, it's kinda quirky.
Although...I think I do prefer making spelling mistakes with my icing!
Too Anglocentric.
Lol, I like it, it's cute. I bake all the time, so why not. But I'd have to find it at least 50% off.
its cute! but i like my cakes with frosting so that would be a pain. but i like the idea!
You could just put a huge glob of icing in the center! yum!
I don't like it at all. Not festive enough.
This would be awesome and you can still decorate the letters with icing or sprinkles if you want too.
I think its great for folks who like cake but no icing. You could probably get a little more creative with decorating it too, and pipe the icing on in a less traditional way.
I think there should be white cake batter poured into the letters and chocolate cake batter poured on top so the letters stand out.
Good call, Keiren, I hate these molds that look interesting visually but make inconsistent, rock-hard cakes that taste terrible. Plus, I'm an obsessive frosting perfectionist so this would just end up being a pain. And can you imagine cleaning it? No thanks.
hate it. i would much rather spelling it out in icing.
Eh. I don't really like it since you wouldn't be able to frost the cake.
Bisou, that's a great idea!
That's cool. After a while all that frosting on my nephews and nieces cakes gets ridiculous. A simple message baked into a delicious cake would be fun.
I like it!
Cute in theory, but I can't imagine how to unstick the cake without crumbling the letters, silicon or not.
I agree with soapbox. The first thing I thought when I saw it was "Those letters are going to stay stuck in the mold!" and I also agree that cleaning it would be tedious.
I like it. Besides, you can write the recipients name in the blank space in icing. Since it's silicone, you could turn it inside out and wash it properly.
