On New Year's Day, my hungover friends and I were craving Spanish comfort food. We wound up going to one of the best tapas haunts in Chicago, Café Iberico. When this calamari dish came to the table, we got into a discussion about what part of the squid tasted better — the rings or the tentacles — and none of us could come to a consensus. What do you think?

The tentacles are so creepy looking I just can't do it. The rings at least dont look like they could start movng anytime!
Ugh, neither. Calamari is too rubbery for me.
I like both, but the tentatcles are better. Especially when it's fried -- the tentacles retain the crispiness better. Ok, now I'm completely craving seafood.
Both!
I'll go with both (not much of a tie breaker entry) but props on Iberico- it's delicious!
The tentacles, incidentally, also hold onto more batter, if that's what you crave. Which it is when I'm ordering...
Ew on both accounts. I tried calamari at House of Blues once and while it wasn't bad I'm not going to order it myself, ever.
thankfully i can say that i'm a vegetarian so i don't eat calamari - but if i did (or rather when i did) i have to say that i'm a ring person.
The tentacles are my absolute favorite! I LOVE calamari!!!!!
It's not my favorite food ... but I really don't discriminate between the parts.
the tentacles, I always go for those first. but i love both. with marinara, and shaved parmesean.
tentacles or rings. I love me!! hahahaha
I like the rings the best, but I love it all!
I have to eat the rings. I just can't do the tentacles. *shudder*
I've had both, it's okay...not sure it's my fav thing to eat by any means.
I am of the camp that believes the tentacles hold the most flavor/texture/batter!
OMG I LOVE BOTH TOO! Actually I've had this question in my mind often bc my fiance makes me a dish I
I with you Yum - I find the tentacles to be way more flavorful. All those little nooks definitely hold more batter/flavor.
However, in the end - I truly love them both equally.
Calamari is one of my favorites....
Both! And I'll eat them prepared almost any kind of way.
I always go for the tentacles first - they have more favor than the rings.
I love the rings with lemons, my favourite italian directly-by-the-beach food
Both! Whenever my mum and I go to this Mexican restaurant, we always order calamari.
I haven't had good calamari yet in the US...well maybe once, but nothing compared to the calamari I had when I was in Italy. Not rubbery at all! Here it's just so gross.
When it's cooked right it isn't rubbery. I myself prefer the rings... I actually dislike seafood but I tried calamari recently on whim when I was feeling adventurous!
I answered tentacles but really it depends, if its fried then definitely tentacles (I answered that cause most of the time when you get calamari its fried) but if its grilled or sauteed or cooked however else I like the texture of the rings better.
My sister eat the tentacles... we don't fight
the rings!!
Both! Ruth's Chris Steak House has an amazing calamari that has both rings and tentacles.
I don't eat calamari...I think it's rubbery and repulsive.
I slightly prefer the rings to tentacles - i haven't stopped in a while to reexamine that choice though cause hubby slightly prefers the tentacles to rings - so we have an unspoken agreement I would throw off if i ever changed my mind.
Do you know how happy I am that the actual Calamari put in his two cents?
I can eat
both these days and enjoy them nearly equally. There was once upon a time that I would nearly throw up if you placed the tentacles in front of me.
the tentacles are crispier.
i would say rings but thats only because the one time i made calamari myself and prepared all the squids from scratch, i ate what i thought was a tentacle and turned out to be battered squid brain. NOT GOOD.
I tried Calamari three times so far, Mediterranean style, and just couldn't get over the weird texture. The taste was okay, but that rubbery texture...
Ewe! I'll pass on both.
I prefer tentacles, but I like the rings as well.
It's all yummy to me!
I've never tried the tentacles but I liked the rings at this upscale restaurant. I actually didn't even know it was squid... I hate that I know now....
Tentacles. Yummy...
Both!
I tried a tentacle once, never again. Theres just something so wrong about chewing on tentacles, it's the texture.
I also tried octopus tentacles, I couldn't handle the texture of the suckers. Ugh... *shudder*
i've been served both but the octopus shape of the tentacles freaked me out.
I love both, but I definitely always make sure to get some tentacles first.
Mmm I love calamari! I haven't had it in so long! I love both parts equally. I especially love savoring the tentacles in front of people who are completely grossed out by them! I'm so nice =)
I know the post is a little old, but can someone anyone PLEASE tell me how the calamari in the pic is prepared? It looks so good!
Smacks83: It was from Café Iberico in Chicago!
