In the past few years, we've seen savory cheesecake and salted caramels take over the gourmet food scene. So could salty coffee be far behind?
Time reports that Taiwan's number one coffeehouse, 85C Bakery Cafe, introduced a sea-salt coffee that's been topping its sales charts. The sweetened coffee has a thick foam that's imbued with the flavor of sea salt.
Tell me: Do you think this sounds more appetizing than a hot smoothie?

i read about this also, and i think they reasoned that by drinking all the salt first, it'll enliven your taste buds even more for the sweetness of the coffee afterward. it's like when you add salt to desserts to bring out their sweetness.
1ugh.. the thought of it makes me gag.. I love my sweet coffee.
but I guess I'd try it. If it's
selling they might be on to something.
2Who knew that Starbucks salted carmel hot chocolate would be as incredibly awesome as it is? So I'd bet this would be good too.
3With these polls, the "Previous Story" and "Next Story" buttons are so big that they overshadow the "Vote" button. I continuously miss it.
4Ooh, I'd totally try that. I'm not into really salty things, but if it's all on the top and only sea salt I think it might be very good.
5i would be willing to try it - i know that salt can enhance the flavors of a lot of things so this could be ok too.
6Salt's natural ability to accentuate both food and beverage is indisputable. Salt makes simple ingredients shine and when paired with classic cocktails, makes you salvate and want another sip.

I'm not surprised that salt and coffee make a wonderful marriage.
7I don't drink coffee, but my parents have been adding a pinch of salt to their home brewed coffee ever since I can remember. Can't be all that bad.

9Sure, why not?? I'll try just about anything once.
10I drink shots of espresso with no sugar in them and when they're made well, they usually have a bit of a salty character to them. I think it'd be lovely.
11I wonder if it would taste sort of like Chubby Hubby ice cream, with the pretzels in it. I love salty/sweet combos, so I'd probably give it a try.
12No, I don't eat foods with added salt (or added sugar).
13Sounds interesting! I'll try it once.
14Ive been to 85C before and its amazing!
15Ummmmm doubt it. I hate coffee.
16I'd drink it.
17My initial thought was, "doubtful", but then I realized I like quite a few sweet/salty things so Yes, I would try it once.
18I've tried this before; this coffee is actually really good. The salt really does bring out the sweetness in the coffee and adds to the aroma. Hard to explain...but the principle is like adding salt to fruit or a little to sweet deserts to bring out the sweetness.
Problem though is people don't know you're supposed to 1) either shake the beverage so the foam is distributed, or 2) drink a little foam first and then dip down into the sweet coffee (this method gives the best contrast, but is tedious).
