At an inaugural benefit for D.C. Central Kitchen, Tom Colicchio went from being a top chef to a real-life hero.
According to eye witness Ezra Klein, Joan Nathan, the award-winning cookbook author of Jewish Cooking in America and hostess of the event, began to choke on a piece of chicken. Colicchio happened to be nearby and when Alice Waters shouted, "Does anyone know the Heimlich maneuver?" he was able to perform the life-saving technique on Nathan.
Nathan was lucky to have such a strong, quick-thinking chef nearby. After hearing this news, do you consider Colicchio a hero? Does it make you want to learn the Heimlich maneuver?

They taught us that in school, everyone should know the Heimlich. Especially people working in food, isn't that a training requirement?
1wow - that's kind of scary if you think about it - i think that it's a great thing - being in the right place at the right time. what a way to start off your inaugural experience.
2Thats great that he was there and able to help!
3Oh my god, that guy must've been mortified. Ha ha. Nice work Tom!
4How can someone not know the Heimlich? How does ALICE not know it?
Remind me not to choke the next time I'm at Chez Panisse.
5Aww ya gotta love Tom for coming to the rescue!
6Gay or not, Tom Colicchio is a HERO!
7It's a vital skill to know, especially in the restaurant/food industry. I had to perform the Heimlich maneuver on myself once...I was choking on a bagel and my brother was standing there, watching me and saying "Hey, you're turning kinda blue!". I managed to force myself against the countertop and blow the bagel piece out.
8Good for Tom! Everyone should know how to do it. He is not a hero though...just doing something he was trained to do. Everyone PR too.
9Everyone should learn CPR is what I meant.
10Doing something you know how to do is not mutually exclusive of being a hero. I think it's awesome that he did that.
As a CPR instructor, we're supposed to tell people that even bad CPR beats no CPR...but given the bad CPR I've seen, I don't know if I'd actually want bad CPR if I needed CPR.
