While YumSugar was busy learning about caviar at the Fancy Foods Show, I was searching the Italian section for exciting new drinks. With its smooth, easy-drinking liquid, and clear anise-y taste, Izzi Sambuca caught my eye.
Sambuca is a popular Italian liqueur that's great for sipping on a cold afternoon. The distinctive flavor of licorice is prominent, but not overpowering. Izzi makes two kinds: premium original and Sumbuca al Caffé, a variation on theme with subtle undertones of coffee beans and a rich caramel color. Both are warming, but not too strong, full bodied yet not syrupy, and slightly sweet.
Sambuca was popular at the show and Izzi's offerings were my favorite. I definitely plan on adding a bottle to my liquor collection. How about you? Have you tried Sambuca?

This was the third brand of Sambuca that we tried at the show...and by far the very strongest!
1My boyfriend LOOOOOOOOOOOOVES Sambuca with a passion (as you can tell). I grew up with it all around me in my big ole Italian family but I never cared for licorice flavor so I can't say I like it.
2I used to liiiiiiiiiiiiiive ambuca in college. Ha.
3live for Sambuca rather...darn keyboard
4My friends all got drunk with it during our Senior trip to the Dominican Republic. The hotel bar just gave it away like candy.
5When I worked in various bars in Greece in the mid-to-late 90's sambuca was very popular as a shot/shooter, a bit like tequila. Although I would drink the odd glass of ouzo with a meze, I found sambuca to be too sweet and sickly, but you could always set the tiny glass alight and have it burn for a few minutes...in fact some people would set it alight before they drank it. yuk.
6I've had Black Sambuca. Straight, flaming, over ice and in shots.
7I love it.
Just the thought of Sambuca makes me want to vomit...I hate anything that tastes like licorice. Blech.
