Today's date, May 24th, is a memorable day in California wine history. Before 1976, France was regarded as the only region to produce great wines. 31 years ago, a blind taste test was conducted by a group of eleven of France's most prestigious figures in the wine industry. The white wines were tasted first and the judges unanimously awarded the top honor to both (Chalone Winery and Chateau Montelena) - two California whites. Likewise, the top red wine went to a Cabernet from Napa's Stag's Leap Wine Cellars. The judges were appalled by the outcome and the results of the tasting were not publicized in the French press. Although it is difficult to evaluate the scientific results of such an objective tasting, the judgment did wonders in elevating the status of California wines.

1Then where is this Californian wine?? All I ever see in the USA is Ernest and Julio and Woodbridge. I'd love to try some good stuff to give the USA a fair grade in my brain (this will have to wait til after baby and breastfeeding though!) but it's hard to find anything other than these two brands abroad and I know they can't be representative of all USA wines!
2By the way, I'm happy this happened for the Californian wine market...French are total wine snobs but some of us break that mould and enjoy foreign wines
Just before I got preg, we had 3 cases of a Chilean red delivered to the house and 2 South African. My "true" French friends gasp in horror at this LOL!
3Mme Hart: I would suggest going to small wine shops and asking the owner if he can order you a few bottles of Californian wines. Or you could always shop online. Especially now that 31 years have passed, California produces many high quality delicious wines.
4I wonder how the local vineyards in Northeast Ohio, where I live, fair...oh, well at least I like them.
5Mme Hart, I had to read your profile to figure out how you could have missed the wines from California! Of course the French don't sell our wines! I'd wager that you are not hurting for amazing wine for your table living in France though.

Even selling other wines from
"semi-reputable" countries like Italy is cause for debate here in wine shops. From what I recall, when the "anti-French/Freedom Fries" bullsh*t happened in the USA, American wines were pulled
from the shelf in protest here in France and will remain off for a long, long, loooooooong time! LOL!
