Coca-Cola is perhaps the most classic of American drinks, however the company has announced their plan to remove the word "classic" from its name. "Classic" was added over twenty years ago, in 1985, to signify that the brand was making a return to using the original recipe. Now with a global approach to advertising, the word is no longer beneficial to the brand. In the current ad campaigns, "Coke side of life" and "open happiness," the word is not employed. According to a spokesman from Coca-Cola, the "classic" is totally unnecessary:
It felt like the right time. When people think Coca-Cola, they think classic. More than two decades after the introduction of that word, its reason for being a descriptor has disappeared.
The beverage company doesn't foresee any customer backlash and has already removed the "classic" from fountain drink cups. I'm not affected by the change; to me Coke is classic. How do you feel about it?

I don't really have much of an opinion about it...I don't really like Coke very much. But I agree, Yum, that it will always be a "classic", whether the term is on the bottle or not.
1Aw man, I always say "you want a Coca-Cola Classic?"
I guess I can still say it....
2Doesn't bother me, it's still a classic whether the word is there or not.
3As a Classicist and a lover of Classical music, I see a conspiracy to wipe ancient cultures off of the face of the earth, and I object strenuously.
4well i feel like if they are looking to evolve and become more modern and contemporary, then this is probably the right thing for them to do. it's a hard thing when you're trying to play with competition. i hope that this does something good for their business. i'm not worried that it'll alienate consumers at all...so that's not even a concern.
5Yeah, it's about time to remove it. But oh my word, that New Coke back in the day was craptacular. Blech.
6If they really wanted to go back to how it used to be made they should make it with cane sugar instead of HFCS.
I hate Coke for that reason alone.
7Well said Lauren, I'm with you on that!
8Ditto LaurenG, flying. I might actually drink it if they made it genuinely "Classic."
9Yeah, "New Coke" -- what a disaster that turned out to be.
10Most of their consumers probably do not know the story.
11I'm thrilled, and have been waiting for this news ever since the original formula was re-introduced as "Coca-Cola classic" back in 1985. At that time, new Coke was being marketed as simply "Coca-Cola," and it irritated me to no end that they were giving the traditional name of the drink to the new formula, not to the one we all know and love. After "Coca-Cola" (new Coke) was discontinued, I figured it would only be a matter of time before they dropped "classic" from the original formula's name. Afterall, it was ridiculous for The Coca-Cola Company to technically not be producing a drink with the name "Coca-Cola." Anyway, I feel that by dropping the word classic and giving Coca-Cola its rightful name back (Coca-Cola) the whole sorry "New Coke" fiasco has finally been completely put completely behind us.
