Last month Tropicana debuted a clean new look to emphasize the all-natural, fresh squeezed juice. However, due to an overwhelming amount of customer outrage, the company is abandoning the changes and returning to the old packaging. Many loyal Tropicana fans were disgusted by the brand's redesigned logo — which features a glass of orange juice against a white backdrop, instead of the familiar orange with a straw poking out the side — calling it ugly, stupid, and generic-looking. According to Neil Campbell, the President of Tropicana North America, the company was unaware of its fiercely loyal consumers:
We underestimated the deep emotional bond [of the brand's original logo]. What we didn't get was the passion this very loyal small group of consumers have. That wasn't something that came out in the research. Those consumers are very important to us, so we responded.
The reaction will be quick: Tropicana plans to discontinue the redesigned packaging immediately and have the old image back on the carton by next month. The juice giant isn't the only brand to update its logo; Pepsi, Snapple, and Heinz have recently revamped their trademark images. Only time will tell if these companies fare better with consumer support than Tropicana did.
Did you notice the new Tropicana packaging? How do you feel about the controversy?

I think the "controversy" is ridiculous because the juice is the same which is what really counts IMO. I personally thought the new design was ugly but I am loyal to the brand and continued to buy Tropicana regardless. I'll be glad to see the old logo though.
1well it's interesting, i thought at first that tropicana was the generic brand at the store since i didn't identify with the new logo, so i can understand why people were upset but sometimes change isn't bad. i wonder who's going to get the backlash internally from this one though. i know that from working IN advertising that there is copy and creative testing, and no company would have put out something that wasn't tested if they were smart. oh well. at least they have something that's tried and true.
2I wrote that article on the bus last night and when I got home, I opened the fridge and found two of the new cartons! When I asked my dad what he thought of the redesign he said, "What? That's Tropicana? I thought I was buying the cheap kind."
3I noticed it last week at the store and was indifferent about it. We don't buy OJ a lot so I did not even realize it was that new. It seems like everyone updates their look every few years.
4@partysugar - Hahaha! Aren't dads great? That sounds like something my dad would say!
5I actually really like the new packaging! It actually made me switch BACK to Tropicana after buying other brands for several months.
6I thought the new design was a generic brand. Then the store clerk pointed it out to me when I asked him where the Tropicana went. My roommate has been sick, so I had specific instructions to get Tropicana with pulp for her.
7I was not a fan of the new design -- I usually get the tangerine juice and always had the hardest time distinguishing it from the regular OJ!
8I thought it looked nice and modern. Seriously, people get upset about this stuff? Get a life.
9
10I know ... I'm so blind, because it says tangerine RIGHT there.... but I guess I am used to shopping in a hurry and was thrown off!
11I don't know, the word Tropicana seems big enough to not confuse it with something else. I just don't get how this was even an issue. Not trying to be snarky or nothing, I just don't get it. I mean if they had changed their formula or something, ok I get that. But this?
12I liked it. I really didn't care either way though, just as long as the recipe stays the same.
13I noticed the new packaging because I thought it looked cheap, generic, and 70's, but not in a good 70's kind of way. As a graphic designer I thought I was the only one who'd noticed. I think people are responding more to how unsophisticated it looks more than the fact that it's changed.
14I don't buy tropicana anyways... isn't it from concentrate??
15I noticed it but didn't think much of it. I buy it anyways, my husband drinks tons of OJ and only likes tropicana, i usually buy it in the gallon jugs at BJ's and those look the same as always
16why does it matter?? isn't it the same orange juice in there?
17That's really funny. I actually liked the new logo a lot, but it doesn't really matter to me since I don't really buy orange juice.
18we actually talked about this in my marketing class a couple weeks ago- several people pointed out it looks like the BP gas logo as well. but yea the first time i went to buy it, it definitely took me a minute to figure out it was tropicana
19I really don't see why it matters. Tropicana still doesn't taste all to great, new label or not.
20When I first saw the new box, I didn't even think it looked real. Wonder what their marketing folks used to decide that their packaging needed a facelift? Or did they do any research at all?
21Hmmmm I couldn't care less, I buy whatever is cheap. People really revolt to new product designs? Sounds kind of lame to me, people need to get a life.
22I can't believe people were "disgusted" by the new design. That's an extreme reaction to a CARTON OF OJ!!!
23People sure do overreact! It's just a carton of orange juice. I guess some people just get really attached to what they know and love.
24Interesting. I don't usually buy orange juice, so I hadn't noticed.
25I buy my juice based on price (I only use it for smoothies) and Tropicana happened to be 2 for $6. I actually did not look at the brand name and thought I was buying Safeway brand juice. I did not realize it was Tropicana until I read this article and checked it.
26Lauren, Tropicana is not from concentrate. It says it right on the container.
I find this controversy hysterical. Outraged? Really? People were outraged over the redesign? I thought it was ugly, and would take some getting used to, but I'd continue to buy based on what was on sale (Tropicana or Florida's Natural).
27Musicjunkie, I thought that same thing! People actually used the word disgusted? Bizarre.
28It's a stupid logo, people. Get over it! I always read the packaging when I buy food, so how do you pick up the brand-name stuff and think it's the generic stuff? It says TROPICANA right on there. I don't usually buy brand name food anyway because here's a little secret for y'all: Most food packaging plants pack the exact same product for say, Tropicana, as they do for Roundy's Orange Juice. The only difference is the packaging and the price.
29Consumers were irritated bc:
301. new design harder to read, brand harder to identify. design does not "mean" anything. brand name in thin font running vertically on the side. (recall old Tropicana design had brand name in huge font across the top with the orange and straw - you can find that from 500 ft away).
2. harder to distinguish between types of OJ. the old design made it very clear with a colored band across the box with pulp/no pulp/etc.
how strange is it that people actually concern themselves with what a carton of OJ looks like?!?!
31you gotta wonder how these people define "problems".
This is all much ado about nothing. The packaging looked '70s to me, but I liked it and the packaging is not why I'd bother to buy the juice. I love Tropicana so it doesn't matter.
I also think Pepsi's new packaging looks '70s to me even though their message is all about the generations of Pepsi drinkers. But really, we're in a recession so why should we care about the new design of some food and drink products?
32I thought it was the store brand, too!
33I thought it was generic as well. I spent 5 mins running around looking for the brand and didn't see it, so just bought the generic--or what I thought was the generic.
34I also thought it was the store brand at first - we only buy Tropicana, so I was wondering where the heck it went. I don't consider myself distressed by the change, but I can't say I mind the fact that they are changing it back - that orange with the straw in it was kind of a nostalgic image that pretty much shows exactly what any orange juice brand should want to convey - juice that tastes like you stuck a straw in an orange...yum
35I thought it looked clean, modern and the organic healthy look people go for now...
36I dont drink orange juice so for me it doesn't matter
If this isn't the silliest mess! Who gives a rat's behind what the carton looks like? Is the orange juice the same?? Ridiculous!!
37i was not happy with the new logo, when i opened my fridge i couldn't find my tropicana orange juice!
38I noticed it too.. I didn't like it, so I am kinda glad they listened to everyone and are changing it back.
39Uhhh, it's the same juice....people are so weird!
40I went in the fridge earlier to get some juice and saw the bottle of it, and thought at first that my mom had bought the generic brand. I actually had to stop and read the bottle to notice it was Tropicana.
41I don't mind the new label...it IS just a label after all, but it threw me off for a minute.
aww, i liked the new design. i don't get why people are so upset. the juice is still the same.
