Despite attempts to maintain high profits through downsizing cookie boxes, the Girl Scouts of America are not immune to the poor economy. MSNBC reports a dramatic decline in cookie sales with some troops selling 35 percent less cookies than they did last year. Although the institution lowered its cookie-selling goal in anticipation of the recession, Girl Scouts is nowhere near its goal.
Not only are the Girl Scouts having a hard time getting people to purchase cookies, it's also being plagued by counterfeit currency. Fake $20 bills were use to buy cookies from several troops in the Bremerton, WA, area. No suspects have been named, but many troops now employ a special pen that detects fake bills.
While I'm not shocked by the decline in sales, I was surprised to hear about the fake money. I don't understand how anyone could cheat young girls who are raising money for a good cause. How do you feel about the matter? Has the recession changed your Girl Scout cookie purchasing habits?

who fakes out little kids that are Girl Scouts!!? How terrible.
1Poor little girls! ;_; I do find it slightly cute/hilarious that someone out there would want the cookies badly enough to fake money. Sigh~ poor things.
2Fake money to buy girl scout cookies? That's pretty low. I've been craving samoas for weeks but I can't seem to find any girl scouts in my neighborhood. Damn cravings!
3Who would do that? What a disgusting individual.
4That's pretty awful.
5That's a new low.
6Even in rough times, I'm still going to buy a few boxes to support the little girls I know that sell them. The fake money thing surprises me as well...someone must really, really like GS cookies and not want to have to pay for them. It's pretty sad that people would go so low, though.
7I dont know if its just me or not but the boxes i purchased this year just dont taste the same.
8I read a story a few weeks ago. It was in Texas (I think), where a Girl Scout had a booth set up at the local Wal-Greens. Someone came up to the girl, grabbed her cash bag with roughly $250 in it and took off. It was planned because a woman was sitting there in the driver's seat of the get away car. How sad! Please stealing from Girl Scouts.
9*People stealing from Girl Scouts.
10i didn't use to but now my niece has been in it for the last few years so i've been buying them from her... i felt bad this year b/c she didn't end up with a lot of sales and my whole family ended up buying about 5 boxes each to make her feel better...
11Aww redstar that's precious
12I didn't buy them before. I keep wishing for some Camp Fire Candy
I can't believe people would steal from them though. Pretty low.
13That is so unbelievably low
14If anything, my husband and I bought more cookies this year than most years because we assumed they had less sales than usual.
That is just wrong!
15How low can people get? Stealing from children? My God...
16That being said, we got 6 boxes of GS cookies in my cabinet. Recession or not, you gotta support the scouts
I bought more cookies than usual this year....
And starangel, that is awful, someone stealing that poor girl's money! How low of a human being are you that you steal money from a girl scout??
17Uh-oh...
18If any Girl Scouts come to my door, I'll probably buy a box or two. I'm a little disappointed in the smaller boxes because I thought the regular sized boxes were too small for the price I've paid.
Stealing from Girl Scouts is just mean! They're little girls! They're doing something good and people are stealing from them?
19Who would steal from Girl Scouts?? That's sad.
I bought three boxes this year: Thin Mints, Samoas, and Tagalongs. They're sitting on my desk right now (the Tagalongs have already been opened, hee!) Three boxes is about normal for me for cookie season... although I did feel more compelled to buy after reading here about how the Girl Scouts are struggling with sales..
20That's really just very sad.
I bought two boxes the other day.
Go Girl Scouts!
21Awww
22I planned on buying many! However, I have yet to see any being sold, I can't believe it. As a city dweller, usually I see the scouts in the train station or at the grocery store... I'm keeping an eye out!
23the decline is kind of par for the course i think. especially since we all know that the cookies, as great as they are, aren't the healthiest - so it's hard to justify buying them sometimes even if it's for a good cause. i think that it's really horrible to think that someone was scamming the girls though. that's just not fair/right and i hope that they have consequences to deal with.
24Tisk tick counterfeiters!
I support the girl scouts and bought 7 yummy boxes of cookies this year.
25I haven't bought any girl scout cookies in years.
As far as the counterfeit money people... if a person uses counterfeit money, they'll use it on anyone - it doesn't matter who it is. People disgust me sometimes. I don't care who you use it on stealing is stealing.
26Who knows where the counterfeit bills even came into the cash flow though; meaning, I think it's important to remember that some customers may have unknowingly paid with fake money.
In my area, I actually haven't seen any girl scouts selling this year. Otherwise, I'd love to help them out!
