I actually ordered the bamboo mat last week. I couldn't find anywhere around here that sells them. It's supposed to be here Tuesday and I'm so excited to try my hand at making sushi!
Sushi night is my boyfriend's and my default too-lazy-to-make-dinner dinner. Just go down the street for a nice piece of fish (usually salmon, because it's always fresh and inexpensive) and
some cucumbers and avocado. I'll chop 'em up while the bf makes the rice, and then we just sit and roll as we eat. I love it because it's easy, cheap, and it makes us both sit down at the
table for dinner because we have to compile it ourselves... when we're busy, it's usually just dinner at the desk =C
i wouldn't say i "frequently" make it, but i have a few times. it is a LOT of work: getting the rice just so, getting all the ingredients to have a good variety, tracking down the freshest
sushi quality fish, etc. i do tend to be an over-achiever in the kitchen though (lol) so maybe if i edited myself better it wouldn't be so bad.
There are some sushi varieties that I wouldn't dare take on at home (salmon roe, octopus, and pickled mackerel come to mind), but there are many that I have tried and loved. Recently, my
girlfriend and I made a ton of ama-ebi (sweet shrimp) which we made in nigiri and chirashi form (nori was nowhere to be found in my apartment, sadly).
I don't even have a bamboo mat, I just use saran wrap to roll it up! Plus, it makes the rolls easier to cut into slices that way. I mostly only make california rolls or cucumber rolls at home
to avoid the fish dilema.
Props to you guys who do it frequently...I have no desire to myself...I'm a pretty fast eater so it seems like a lot of prep, work, etc for about 3 bites of food..I'd much rather go down the
black and have someone else do the work!
I make veggie maki regularly and gave a sushi making party once. Never again. The party was fun but the sushi making was a disaster. It's apparently not so easy for many people.
Anyway, I told my Japanese colleague and he said he and his friends do sushi pockets. Basically cut a large sheet in four and then have people put their toppings on the quarter sheet and eat
as a pocket.
I now do this as a quick my-4-organic-Trader-Joe-organic avocados-all-went-ripe-at-the-same-time after work dinner. Sushi rice, miso soups and cucumbers are easy to do.
Nope, never tried making my own. If I'm going to eat it, I want to make sure it's good and I know that if I attempt it and screw it up, it won't be nearly as good as the stuff I can order at
a restaurant.
Yup, especially since my mum lived in Japan during her teens and learned how to prepare sushi. It also helps that ingredients are not hard to find here.
i still haven't built up the confidence to work with raw fish and i still have to perfect my rice. i should really just go to a class with a sushi chef one of these days
I just made it last night actually. It was a huge pain in the ass, but I want to keep trying anyway, I feel like I could get good at it. Just did cucumber and avo.
We make it frequently, I have so many asian markets nearby so the variety is amazing, my favorite ingredient is the flying fish roe, totally makes it! I ahve also figured out how to duplicate
the sauce for spicy tuna.
i've always wanted to. i just have to get the tools needed. i'll try it once, see if
I can handle it, but i do enjoy watching the sushi chefs making them.

3I would love to make sushi, but I'm afraid it would just fall apart or look like crap.
4Nope, never ate it either and I don't plan on it.
5I've hosted a few sushi parties - they are a lot of work but worth it. It's all of the prep work that's a killer.
6I made sushi once. I thought it was a lot of work. I like variety.
7I love making sushi but I've only made the non-fish kind because I'm nervous about buying sushi grade fish.

This sounds like a much better idea.
12I've made fake sushi haha
lovee california rolls. Though
half the time we're out of seaweed wrap; I always munch on those haha.
13None of our local stores carry Nori or Sushi rice so no we've never made it.
14i love making sushi! always veggie sushi though...i leave handling the fish to the pros
it is so cheap but feels like a fancy meal.
15nope - i've never made it and i don't really eat it , so that's probably part of the reason right there.

18I've made raw (just made of vegetables) sushi w/ cauliflower as rice a few times.
