It may seem like a no-brainer, but if you're hosting a party (any kind that involves food) get in the habit of checking the dishwasher before the the soiree starts. Parties always generate a lot of dirty dishes, and the last thing you need after a night of wining and dining is a sink full of dirty dishes. It's also a good idea to take out take out the trash and recycling before the event begins. That way you won't have to deal with disposing of a full bin of trash when you should be mixing a martini for your guests.

this is a no-brainer but something that's still good to be reminded of. think about all those nights that you just don't want to look at the piles of dishes, and had the dishwasher been empty - problems would have been averted
1This is so, so true. I threw a little dinner party last weekend and the volume of dishes generated was insane. I was glad to be able to fit most of them in my empty dishwasher so that at least I wouldn't wake up to an entire sink full of washing up.
2Another bonus is that if you have any close friends at the party that will help you clean up, they can just throw stuff in the dishwasher!
3Make sure there are extra rolls of toilet paper in all the bathrooms.
Start making ice the day before and stock pile.
4I wish I had a dish washer.
5We save our aluminum cans, so when I have a party I put a bag for the cans next to the cooler where all the beer/soda is kept. I also make sure to unload the dishwasher before things start so there's one less thing to do. Make sure your bathroom's clean and that you have a plunger in plain view (hey, you never know...you don't want anyone to get embarrassed or anything) and have good soap and nice towels for people to use.
