After a rough year, Starbucks has tried to start off 2009 on the right foot. In addition to rolling out a new line of instant coffee, it also began offering "value pairings" that include two new breakfast sandwich options. Considering the history of the chain's breakfast sandwiches, I was eager to try them out.
The Artisan Breakfast Sandwiches, as they're called, come on square-shaped, ciabatta-style rolls. The ham contains three slices of very thin black forest ham, mild cheddar, and a Parmesan egg frittata, while the bacon includes four short slices of smoked bacon, gouda cheese, and the same Parmesan egg frittata. To see what I thought of them, read more.
Last year, the coffee titan announced it would be modifying its breakfast sandwiches because customers were complaining that they gave off a pungent cheese smell that interfered with the aroma of coffee in stores. The egg layer, with its mixed-in Parmesan cheese, is the chain's solution to the aroma issue.
At less than 400 calories, and a price that won't empty your wallet ($3.95 for a sandwich and a tall coffee), the petite sandwiches aren't half bad.
I didn't mind the black forest ham and mild cheddar, although my palate was more suited for the bacon sandwich, with its thin, crispy strips of pork and überoozy gouda cheese. Although I love a good English muffin, I found myself preferring the new ciabatta rolls; they were more substantial and could stand up to the rest of the sandwich.
For a morning on the go — or when I'm craving breakfast as an afternoon snack — I would definitely order an artisan bacon sandwich to pair with my coffee. Have you tried one of Starbucks' new savory breakfast pairings? What did you think of the sandwiches?

It looks quite appetizing... too bad I don't eat pork and am not the biggest fan of eggs
1: (
I tried the turkey bacon one. I had a few bites and it was disgusting. It had a very plasticky taste and a weird aftertaste.
2Interesting that it would be appetizing to someone who doesn't like pork and eggs.
I think I'd go to Starbucks more often if they didn't overroast their coffee.
3I've never been impressed with any of their food besides the usual breakfast pastry. This doesn't look appetizing to me at all.
4I'm not a huge fan of eggs or breakfast sandwiches in general, but I tried the bacon sandwich this morning out of desperation (it certainly looked more appetizing than those piadini things) and it was not bad at all. I wouldn't hesitate get one again.
5maybe if i could get it without the pork/ham part id try it
6i tried the bacon and gouda one...SO delicious. i would most definitely purchase this again.
7hmm i just never go in starbucks
8Yeah well I wish they'd make vegan ones, but I know that's not realistic.
9the bacon ones are fantastic!
10I'll probably try it when I drive across the USA next summer.
11I had the sausage breakfast sandwich a couple of weeks ago, and I liked it. I thought the English muffin had a nice texture, and the egg and sausage were cooked well. I would have preferred the bacon sandwich, but they were out! Next time, I guess. My only problem was that the store staff seemed a little confused about the promotion.
12I wish I had ciabatta rolls. I really want to make one for breakfast today.

14I'm not a fan of microwaved eggs but if I could have the sandwich without the egg, it would definitely be something I'd try once.
15I had the bacon one a couple weeks ago and it was ok. I thought the egg had a weird, almost powder-like consistency so I don't know if I'll partake again.
16Maddi Maye, I don't eat pork and isn't a huge fan of eggs are well!
I thought I was the only one!
17Wunami - You should read more carefully next time, I said it LOOKS appetizing, not that it would be
ChubbieeCheeks- I don't eat pork because it was my way of going 'vegetarian' I can't give up ALL meat so I just gave up the animal I felt worse about eating! And eggs are just...blah!!!
18haha
I'm not going to try them. I already know from past experience that the low fat turkey is going to taste horrible. Bring back the eggs florentine!!!
19Well, I think it's interesting that it would look appetizing to someone who doesn't eat pork and eggs. (Which I'm sure is what Wunami meant.)
20They are not microwaved- they are heated in a convection oven. Ive watched them do it.
I still miss the Spinach Florentine sandwich and was move in love with it than any of their new options...
With that being said- I had one of their ham and cheese ones this morning and it was delicious!
21I tried the artisan bacon sandwich & was very pleasantly surprised. I would oerder one again, but they always seem to be sold out too quickly.
22Starbucks, boooo.
