UK officials are hoping that a simple swap of the dishes will be the quick fix for some of the country's social problems. According to official figures, 43 percent of middle-class professionals exceed safe alcohol guidelines. Experts are putting the blame on the upward size trend of wine glasses. That's why next month, ministers plan to release a mandatory code of practice requiring all venues serving alcohol to offer customers a choice of drink size.
While a standard wine glass once held 125 ml — a little over 4 ounces — many establishments now consider this a "small" size. A large size rings in at 250 ml — a serving that could equal as much as one-third of a bottle of wine. And at least 10 percent of UK bars have been using 250 ml as a standard-sized wine glass. "Glass sizes have increased over the years, as has the strength of wine," said Public Health Minister Dawn Primarolo. "Too often the only size available is a large glass. I would like to see more choice available, so people can opt for a small glass."

Are restaurants going to charge less? Highly doubtful. Sounds like a scam to me. I'll stick with a nice pint of bitter. And if anyone touches the amount of beer in a pint, I think they're going to get a riot on their hands.
1Well having a choice is nice and all but I'm going to guess that the over indulgers are over indulging on purpose. I doubt this will help their problem.
2It will give the opportunity to those driving a chance to have a little glass of wine with a meal. But then there are always those who can't stop at one or even just a small serving. We will have to see how it goes.
3Will they charge less? Because otherwise they're just being douchebags. I'd be so mad if I paid the same price for a teeny glass of wine.
4I thought this had been going on for a while because every restaurant and pub I've been to ask "large or small" and yes, they do charge less for a small glass.

well - i think that if you're being charged the same amount then you'll get upset but i think that it's a good solution to a problem. it's like the one to try to regulate over eating - use smaller plates
7This is downright ridiculous! People should be responsible enough to control their own drinking without these kind of regulations. A large glass doesn't hae to be filled to the edge! The size and shape of glass plays a big part in how the wine actually tastes.
8I agree- the size and shape of the glass is important. If a red is being served in too small of a glass it will not breathe properly...
Plus, if I'm paying for wine at a restaurant ( which is usually jacked up the price 3x anyways ) then you'd better give me a full serving.
