Last week my sister and I went to dinner at a new restaurant, Pizza Nostra, that recently opened in San Francisco's Potrero Hill district. While the flat, crusty pizzas piping hot from the wood-burning stove were delicious, it was the grilled octopus with chickpeas, celery, and lemon antipasto that stood out in my mind.
Although she'd never had octopus, my sister boldly dove in and was pleasantly surprised by the mild taste and slightly chewy texture. We both could not get enough and swore that even our mother — who's afraid of eating more exotic cuisine like octopus — would enjoy the perfect combination of flavor and texture in the dish. However, my mother is not as adventurous as my sister and she doesn't really enjoy trying new things.
Be it a restaurant, recipe, ingredient, or culinary technique, how do you feel about the matter? Do you like tasting new experiences?

who doesn't!? And grilled Octopus is friggin delicious! I can't stand people who don't try new things, it's like what is life for?
1I'll try anything once.
2I love new restaurants and food! If the place as a limited-edition menu or nightly specials, that's generally what I'll order off of.
3OMG Party, you have to decontruct that dish and tell me what was in it to the best of your abilities! I'm into octopus big time right now and that salad has got me going all drooly!
Oh, and as for the post question, yes I love to try new things. How do you know you like something if you don't give it a shot?
4I love trying new things, and I'm definitely going to that restaurant and getting this dish. I love octopus
5I love to try new things. The only thing I won't ever eat is bugs.
I go to culinary school, and I was amazed at how many students refuse to eat different foods. I'm like, why are you here?
6Roarman -- that is interesting. I don't get it, either. But I love trying new things! They will always be the first things I will order on a menu.
7MMM - that dish looks devine! Love grilled squid/octopus. Will have to try Pizza Nostra next visit to SF - which will be in a couple weeks.
8Absolutely!
9Within reason, I will try unfamiliar foods. However, I draw the line at bugs, snakes, that sort of thing.
10i like to try different foods and i'm up for anything at least once....i used to be picky but now some of my favorite foods are things other people are worried to try....
but i'm not a big fan of going to a new restaurant or ordering a whole mean of something just to "try" it...i'll try someone elses or order something to share but for example, if i'm starved, don't pick that moment to ask me to try a vegan or raw restuarant.....i'll try stuff but sometimes i like old faithfuls!
11It is alway fun to taste something new.
12Oh my gosh, my palate has expanded so much in the past 5 years and it's made me fearless with food..I always get something new when I go out to eat, buy the new "weird" products at the market, it's so much fun. I could never just eat the same stuff day after day...
13just because i have religious dietary restriction from trying certain things (ie carnivores) i dont, but a person i worked with once tried kangaroo and swore it was tastier then beef. who knows?
14I'm willing to try new foods, but it depends on the food and the resturant and what I know my stomach can or can't handle ie, extreme spiciness or allergies. As long as it doesn't completely resemble the animal it once was or has eyes that stare back at me, I'll give it a try.
15Sure, I'll eat anything once and if I like it, I'll eat it again! I've had bugs, worms, guinea pigs, various exotic fruits, etc...some I liked, some I didn't. As long as it's not still moving, I'll try it.
16Variety is the spice of life right?
17However there are a few things I won't touch (um- intestines, gizzards, feet... that sort of things)
oh god, I'll eat anything.
This dish looks fantastic!
18That dish looks devine! I'm always up for new food or drinks - anytime, anyplace.
19I am pretty open to trying new things overall, but I also won't do bugs, snakes, frogs, and that type of thing.
Octopus is not on the list of things that I will try either...something about the suction cups that just gets to me.
20I do but with my colitis it makes it hard to really live on the edge food wise when you never know how it will sit in my stomach.
21The only thing I worry about is if it has meat or not. I don't eat pork/red meat but if it doesn't have those 2 things I am game to try anything.
22I usually do. I figure if you don't like it you never have to try it again. And often you'll discover a new favorite dish!
