Remember how I told you about the Mexican Coke spotting at Costco? Well we finally made it out there and luckily there were still cases waiting for us! We snatched up a few bottles and set about doing an A/B blind taste test.
Everyone received two little cups full of soda. One was marked A and the other was B, they then had to determine which they liked better, why they liked it and if they could determine which was the Mexican version and which the regular American version.
The results were pretty even, out of thirteen taste testers, eight of them preferred the Mexican coke, three preferred the American and two thought they were the same. Also, only nine people correctly identified which was the Mexican Coke.
To find out what the taste-testers thought, read more
- I liked B better because it was more carbonated and had a hint of lime flavor in it.
- I tasted A first and it tasted chemically, I tasted B and actually wanted to taste it again.
- B has more flavor, a purer form of sweet.
- A tasted dull compared to B.
- I like A, it's not as sweet.
- If B isn’t the Mexican Coke I’ve lost touch with reality.
- I think I would potentially like B better if I had ice and lemon. And a beach.
- I think that B was mexican. I think they were both too sweet.
- At first I liked A because it was familiar, but than I took a few more sips and realized that B felt better for me and better tasting.
- I think B is real sugar, and A the chemical stuff. I liked A.
And now that you've got their opinions, I'll let you know that Regular Coke (made with corn syrup) was marked A, and Mexican Coke (made with real sugar) was marked B. I knew which one was which, so my opinion was swayed a bit, however I thought that A tasted slightly more acidic and had a bit of a bite, while B tasted smoother and richer. Also, I'm afraid that the results may have been flawed due to the fact that one was from a can and the other from a bottle.
Yet, based on this taste test, I'd say it's safe to say that if you can get your hands on a bottle of Mexican Coke, that it's definitely worth a taste.

Oh I hope I can try some soon!
1Those that can identify the difference between the two cokes must have some keen taste buds. I can't tell the difference between pepsi and coke.
2Wow, popularsugar! Pepsi is SOOOOOOOOOOOO much sweeter to me!
3Coke and Pepsi are completely different flavor profiles* so I'm shocked when anyone thinks they taste the same!
* you can tell I know someone who worked for Coke for a LONG time
4Also, YumSugar, the bottle vs can issue can muddy your tests.
I know I'm not the
only one who can taste the difference between fountain soda, canned soda, glass bottled soda, and plastic bottled soda.
5I am so mad. I went to a Mexican restaurant in Pennsylvania and they had Mexican Coke AND Pepsi on the menu so my boyfriend and I tried to order one of each. A few minutes later, the waitress comes back and says they are all out. ALL OUT? Bogus.
6LaLa, that stinks!
7Thanks for this report!
It would be great if many products that are currently sweetened with high fructose corn syrup (almost everyhting!) had sugar sweetened alternatives. Too bad the corn lobby is too influential!
8In Epcot of Disney World, they have this weird Icicle looking doorway, and the outside is all covered in fake snow, and you walk inside, and it leads you through a long hallway, with each section getting colder and colder. Finally you wonder where it all leads to and why you can no longer feel your legs, and you end up in a big room. Filled with all the Coke memoribila you can imagine. And a little machine in the corner has Cokes from all over the world. I seem to remember the Chinese one being pink.
9Its not just Mexico that has real sugar coke, its pretty much the rest of the world! Because of the high price of sugar in the US compared to the rest of the world, it is much cheaper for companies to use corn syrup. Blame the government for our lack of real sugar coke!

10I used to think Epcot was boring, but if I can get Mexican Coke and Coke from all over the world, then count me in!
11I like Coke Light (Diet Coke outside the US) far better than it's American counterpart and that's sold in Mexico. I wonder if they have that at Costco? That would be super sweet. Hehe.
12the bottled version of coke is sold throughout all of latin america...as you can see much better than US made coke...
13my dad got all giddy when i first told him about that article i read here about seeing mexican coke at costco...he loves it, and it reminds me of whenever my family goes down there to see family and they put it in a plastic bag with a straw...awww, memories.
14Coke in Europe is the only coke I will drink. I hate HFCS! Real sugar is the way to go.
15Mexican Cokes are the best. High fructose corn syrup sweeteners are bad, bad, bad!
16I agree that Coke Light tastes much better than the Diet Coke that is available in the US. It's less chemical-y. My husband also swears that Snickers bars from Mexico taste better than the ones here and he always looks forward to having one with a Mexican Coke when we go on vacation.
17Mexican Coke is addictive. Growing up in Texas, it was not too hard to find, but now that I have lived in Mexico for the last three years, American coke just won't cut it. I think part of the reason it also tastes good is the packaging, food and drinks that come in cans always taste metallic...
18my boyfriend's mexican and insists that it tastes better. i've never tasted mexican coca cola...i'm kind of afraid to drink real coke...diet coke for me!
19How funny you posted this. Our office was just talking about this. I never cared for Mexico's version of Coke. I tried it a couple times when I went down there and it had a plastic taste to it. I guess growing up with American coke anything else tastes strange.
20So Mexican coke is better than American coke. I've heard Colombian coke is pretty good too haha
21i definitely prefer the Mexican coke!
22Mexican Coke and Coca Light are so much better than the American versions. Plus, any drink out of a glass bottle tastes a million times better than one out of a plastic bottle.
23Love the Beach comment/review. lol I prefer Pepsi and yes there is a difference (Pepsi is sweeter, as ALSW said). I do like Coke icees though because the slushiness makes it sweeter.
24I want to try the Mexican Coke. I don't like regular Coke so I'm not sure if I'd like the Mexican coke.
25I dont drink Coke all together because I hate the taste but I might have to try Mexican Coke.
My grandfather will only drink Coke out of glass bottles...hes old school like that
My mom refuses to drink soda out of a plastic bottle
26Wow! never in a million years did I think someone would write about Mexican Coke!! when I was 8 I visited my grandparents in Mexico and the shops there poured coke into plastic bags and put a straw in it and tied the bag around it! the coke was delish!!! I guess they put it in bags so that they could keep the glass bottle
but it was fun for me!!!
27haha this is something my whole family has always said. It was cute reading about it!!!
28I'd say mexican coke is much nicer than regular coke. although regular coke tastes foul in comparison to british coke, i couldn't get over the difference when i was in NYC! There's also a huge difference between coke from the UK and coke bottled in ireland, funny stuff!
29Thank you so much for writing this article. It wasn't until recently that I found out the reasons for Coke tasting different in the U.S. from Coke in Europe. I really wish that we could have real sugar Coke here.
30Of course the Mexican coe is sweeter it is made with sugar cane and not syrup! I grew up on that coke, nothing compares!
31Sounds like the difference between Dublin Dr. Pepper (made in Dublin, TX with pure cane sugar) and regular DP. I never drink Coke, but real sugar is always yummier - and better for you.
32when i went to costa rica it was the same thing! taste so much better with sugar
33I've had Mexican coke before and I definitely noticed a difference and liked it better. I thought the only difference was that they still bottled it in glass. Soda in a glass and fountain sodas are the best! Not a big fan of plastic.
34have any of you guys tasted mexican diet coke aka "coca light" which is how it is said in spanish... anyway i have and it taste JUST like the regular coke, it really makes me doubt it has 0 cals like it claims it does. i swear i feel like im drinking pure sugar! hmmmm... when im not on a diet, i LOVE joya de manzana!!!! :]
35I definitely prefer Mexican coke and Dublin Dr. Peppers to the HCFS equivs. Drinks with HCFS have much more of an aftertaste. Fortunately, it's very easy to find both real sugar versions where I live.
