A couple of weeks ago when I made my half-birthday cake, I ran into some technical difficulties. Although I buttered and floured the cake pan (as the recipe specified), the cake was difficult to remove from the pan. Some chunks of cake ended up sticking to the pan, which did not make me happy.
Normally, even if a recipe doesn't call for it, I line cake sheets with parchment paper. However, this time I was out of it and decided to see if it's really necessary. In my opinion it is: I've never had a problem getting a cake to come out of a pan when using parchment paper. Here's what I do:
- Place the cake pan on top of the parchment paper.
- Trace the outline of the pan onto the parchment paper with a pencil.
- Cut out the shape just inside the penciled line.
- Butter the pan, place the parchment on the bottom, and butter again.
- Follow the recipe to finish the cake.
Do you line your cake pans with parchment paper? Have you ever had a cake that wouldn't come out of its pan?

Lacoste
i usually butter/spray pam on trays and never have a problem removing it from the tray. but this is a nice idea, no extra calories lol
1You can also use waxed paper. Learned that one from my mama!
2My cakes never comes out of the pan clean without a struggle. Probably why I never make cakes anymore. Though this is a great idea I would like to put to practice.
3Parchment paper is my BFF in the kitchen. I use it for just about every baking endeavor.
4Why oh why can't the companies that make parchment baking sheets make them precut? I am somewhat scissors-challenged.
5oops...meant "pre-cut in circles". Brain was ahead of my fingers.
6Good idea. I've never tried this before, but I have been irritated by sticky cake pans.
7I've never had this issue either, a little cooking spray and I'm good to go.
Yum you could also tip the cake upside down on a rack when cooling and it will come out much easier, I do that all the time as well.
8I have silicone cake pans and absolutely nothing sticks to them, so I don't use parchment on them. I do use it when I bake cookies, though. It works great!
I have a coworker who told me that she once tried to re-use the liners of the cereal boxes as parchment paper and it melted all over her cakes. So yeah, you can't substitute that for parchment!
9where do you buy parchment paper? i've been meaning to get some for a while.
10I line my tins with baking paper. I've had a couple stick. I just run a knife around the edge and give the base a couple of taps on the kitchen bench, then it usually comes out clean. If I get a bit that sticks the bottom I just ice it upside down!
11I use Wilton's cake release; cakes come out perfectly.
12norabora: you can find parchment paper in any regular grocery store in the same aisle as the foil and saran wrap.
13the one time i used parchment for cookies the paper kinda burned.
14not on fire or anything but i wasn't happy.
i use silicon mats with no prob of course but what was up with that paper??
i just finish right now a cake...& it did stick..=/
15but...excelent idea!!..nice
=)
