Dorothy J. Gaiter and John Brecher, wine columnists and founders of Open That Bottle Night, recently assessed the world of online wine, only to find it came up short.
"Some really fine stores out there haven't spruced up their sites since dirt was invented," they lamented. They did, however, manage to find a handful of wine sites that do online wine sales right.
I've purchased hard-to-locate bottles of wine online for a couple of special occasions, and never had a problem. Still, if I ordered wine online all the time, I'd be screwed on a couple of last-minute hostess gifts, and stuck with quite a hefty shipping bill. How about you?

this would never occur to me?
1Me either....Never had wine.
2No, I've stopped drinking wine for health reasons (I know they say wine is good for one's health, but in my case, the cons outweigh the pros).
3www.geerwade.com I worked for them seasonally. They have their own wine you can't buy in stores so for that reason online is needed. Their Moscato is to die for.
4http://www.myttv.com that too.
5Wine Library and directly from smaller vineyards. Cant always get what you are looking for at your local wine store. Plus on the web i can read tasting notes and reviews prior to purchase.
6We bought 2 cases of wine when we were at the Biltmore Estate during our honeymoon and ended up ordering another case of our favorites when we ran out. I don't think I'd order from a vineyard I hadn't tried, though.
7This wasn't a voting option -- but I haven't bought wine online because it cannot be shipped to my state. I WOULD if I COULD, but I can't.
8nope - i've thought about it in the past but i've never done it. i have had reps send me wine before that they've gotten online - so that's kind of cool. i guess if you know EXACTLY what you want then it's pretty easy to do ...right?
9No way. The shipping is outrageous.
10No, unfortunately my State prohibites the sale and shipping of alcohol. Shame really.
11It's illegal to ship wine to my state. Actually, it's illegal in a LOT of states. So...
12It never crossed my mind to buy wine online. In thinking about it, I'm not sure I would.
13I'm also in a state where you can't ship liquor, so this isn't an option for me either. I'm not sure that I'd even want to though; I'm not a huge wine person.
14I have a certain wine we love and I wanted to order it online because it was offered cheaper but I live in Florida and they can't ship liquor to a house. Which really stinks because I do gift baskets online at Christmas and I can never send wine then either.
15I buy wines online if there is something I cannot get locally. No reason to pay for shipping if my local store sells it, but if buying online is the only way to get it, I'll order it online. Plus I prefer supporting local stores, and frequently order online from a local store and then go and pick it up.
