Thanks to an article that names the top 25 pizzerias in the United States, the food world has been obsessed with pizza this week. Alan Richman of GQ even believes that pizza is more American than it is Italian. He says,"pizza isn’t as fundamental to Italy as it is to America. Over there, it plays a secondary role to pasta, risotto, and polenta. To be candid, I think they could do without it. Not us. Over here, it’s one of the few foreign foods we’ve embraced wholeheartedly, made entirely our own." I have to agree with him — I think there's some amazing pizza in the US. My favorite kind is the creative, thin-crusted variation they serve at a pizzeria in my hometown. Combine that with a welcoming, European atmosphere and the fact that I normally share the pizza with my closest loved ones, and you've got the best pizza I've ever had.
How about you? What was the best pizza you've ever had and why is it so memorably delicious?

Rapini and housemade sausage pizza from Pizzaiolo in Oakland. The sausage is to die for, the rapini is zesty and delicious, and the crust is thin and flavorful. Plus, the atmosphere is great and, like Party, I usually share this pizza with my closest friends. Yum.
1luzzo's in nyc. and pepe's in new haven. but the best of the best is my mum's pizza.
2Cavallo's on 7th between 28th and 29th (I think), near F.I.T. Haven't been for a while but I loved their pizza.
3Mama Theresa's Flying Pizza in Bolivar, TX! I've had pizza in lots of big cities, but Mama Theresa's is the best ever. I went there with my family every summer for 28 years. It was wiped out in hurricane Ike, and I hope they rebuild.
4Sadly the pizza place I mentioned above was affected by the economy.
5I love pizza, and so does my husband, and I don't want to brag but I think the best pizza I've ever had is one that we made at home - with shredded buffalo chicken, thinly sliced red onion, and a sort of buffalo/marinara sauce instead of regular marinara. Oh and, of course, served with bleu cheese or ranch for dipping :0) Other than that, there's a place called Barley's in Asheville NC that makes my favorite pizza in the whole world!
6I had the best pizza of my life in 2003, a pie with basil, mozzarella, and sausage that was eaten on a dock overlooking the Brooklyn Bridge in 2003. It was from Grimaldi's, a New York favorite. Another time, I missed a flight back to SF for Grimaldi's.
I was disappointed by many of the other selections in the "top" list, but I do believe that A16 has the best pizza in SF.
7PartySugar, a favorite food that ceases to exist might just be the greatest kind of food tragedy ever.
8Every single pizza I ate when I went to Italy. I ate quite a few with onions and mushrooms on them. Delicious!
9NY pizza!!!!!!!!!! Grimaldi's, Lombardis, Luzzo, etc
10E Tutto Qua in North Beach makes unbelievably thin and tasty pizza. I like their margarita style...simple and delish. The best part--- the crust is so thin you can't possibly feel guilty for eating a ton of it!
11celestino's in Chico. No joke. I've eaten all over the bay area and nothing compares to cele's.
12there are SEVERAL great pizza places here in NYC - i can't even begin to name them all. the one thing though is that sometimes i'm just in the mood for a deep dish, so an unos' style chicago pizza is a good thing too.
13This is making me a little homesick for NJ! My favorite pizza is from Mac n' Manco's on the OC boardwalk, it's thin crust and equal sauce and cheese ratio are heaven.
14Brianno's Deli Italia (Eagan, MN) makes a thin crust prosciutto, artichoke heart, and provolone pizza that is food PORN!
15My default answer for this is usually the original Pizzaria Uno. Though, it might be more the memory and the experience. It's a good pizza. I feel like I might end up being disappointed by it if I go again (haven't been to Chicago again).
Sicilia's Pizza in Boston is my favorite place in town. In San Diego, I like this place called Bruno's. It's one of the places my family and our really good friends go to a lot. So there's a lot of memories there adding to the experience. Pizza is excellent though.
16Pizzeria Regina in Boston is the best!!
17Lesley,
I second Pizzeria Regina for the Boston area!
18Nobody here has mentioned New Haven, CT pizza! Sally's and Pepe's are dueling pizza parlors! Both are wonderful, I like Sally's for their red margherita pie and Pepe's for their white clam pie.
19Recently had pie at Tomaso's in SF North Beach....the wood oven gave it a great flavor and the sauce was perfect. Best I've had!
20I also remember having a good pizza some where in Buenos Aires.
Pizzeria Bianco is AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!! I can't believe it is number 4!!! Wow, I waited 4 hours to go there. It was crazy.
21hell yeah, I live next door from #3 on the list, Pizzeria Delfina. Damn good, but they can be inconsistent; sometimes the edges are a little too burned for my taste, but it is my absolute favorite. Gialina was also mentioned, another great place in SF. My BF is from the east coast, and he's all about Arinell's for NY style. I've also tried the indian pizza Richman mentions; it's pretty great. Think of it as naan, but with the indian food baked on top.
22A restarurant called Tito's in Florence. I dream about that pizza, it is to die for!
23Fleur de Lis pizza in Baton Rouge, LA and Slice Pizzeria in New Orleans
24Stella's on 9th ave in NYC
25It's worth a trip to Seattle just to experience a Pagliacci chicken primo. Any Sugarers who come out here, message me and I'll buy you a slice:)
26My uncle and I (we were just a couple years apart) would eat at a place called 'Gutbusters' in Peoria. I haven't had anything comparable since!!
27Gino's Pizzeria in Ithaca, New York! Really, any classic NY style pizza is the way to go and Gino's was/is some of the best.
28The Big Tomato in Miami, FL - the best crust I've ever had in my life, it's light and crisp. Their Pesto Passion pizza is covered in chicken, basil pesto, and creamy white cheeses...every time I talk about it I get a urge to go buy some!
29Can't beat pizza in Italy. Its just different. Love the prociutto pizza. And oddly enough, found a place in Milwaukee, WI on Marquette's campus that is amazing - Angelos. Especially their bambino. Mmmmmmmmm.
30Shakey's Pizza! regular or thin crust it doesn't matter. Get some mojo potatoes and a pint of beer and you're set =) mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
31i love the goats cheese and pine nut pizza at pizza express!
32and what's more there are 241 vouchers online at: www.vouchercodes.co.uk to eat out and beat the credit crunch!
Mellow Mushroom! It's a "chain" in that there are several locations in the Southeast U.S. The Kosmic Karma pizza comes to me in dreams and makes me go eat it the next day.
33mellow mushroom is gross!
My pick is a local one, Satchels in Gainesville. I get the Garlic, mushroom, spinach.
34Pepe's in New Haven, CT. I live in NYC and have family around Hartford, CT and stop at Pepe's every chance I get
35I've been spoiled by the pizzas I've eaten in Italy... whenever I go to a place here that claims they have "real Italian-style pizza", I always look for the egg in the middle of the pizza. lol
(I know, not all of them have that... but I've yet to see one here in the US that does have that...)
36pizza del arte, the one with chicken and moutarde de dijon
37miam!
haha honestly, the Veggie Delight from Papa Murphy's hahaha! white garlic sauce, cheese, spinach, tomatoes, and mushrooms DELICIOUS!!!
38Savvy- LOL!Mac and Mancos is even better because you are sitting right next to the ocean! Everything tastes better mixed with the sea air.
Delorenzos tomato pie in Trenton! or my husbands pizzas made on the grill.
39I am now very hungry!
I have to agree with Savvy Sugar-Mac n Manco's is the best-can't go to the shore without stopping there!
40Strangely, the best pizza I've ever had was at a tiny pizzeria in San Miguel, El Salvador. It was owned by an Italian couple that immigrated there and opened this tiny little restaurant. The pizza had a nice thin crust, fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced vine ripened tomatoes and fresh basil. It was better than any pizza I've ever had here.
41naples, italy in the pie shop where pizza was invented. incredible basic margarita.
42Grimaldi's
43STL has my fave kind of pizza - delicious thin crusts! Fortel's and Imo's have great pizzas, especially veggie or cheese.
44I won't wait in line for pizza at Sally's or Pepe's or Modern in New Haven, CT. We love the pizza at BAR on Crown Street - same yummy thin crust, no standing in line!!!! Here in Portland, we love Apizza Scholls on Hawthorne. Very close to New Haven "apizza"! YUM!!!!
45Nice Slice on Thayer Street in Providence, RI.
46Best Margherita (sp?) I have ever and probably will ever have!
Round Table Pizza... Pineapple *drools*
Runners up include CPK Japanese Eggplant and Dakota Grill Goat Cheese pizza.
