A friend recently returned from South Korea bearing gifts. One of them was a bar of North Korean chocolate candy she'd picked up from the country's demilitarized border. In the manner of a Nestle Crunch bar, it was crispy and crumbly, with little taste of mushrooms at first. But a few minutes later, my mouth was filled with the distinct, earthy taste of shrooms — not terrible but certainly odd. I wish understood Korean so I could have deciphered the ingredients (any takers?), but the bar looked to be composed of corn flakes and pumpkin seeds, coated in mushroom-infused chocolate. Would you have been willing to try it?

I try to be as open as possible, but honestly, no. I couldn't do it.

I'm assuming that alcohol would be provided?
I may take one bite out of curiosity.
i cant stand mushrooms in any shape or form.
maybe the makers misunderstood the whole chocolate truffle thing.
Look, if you buy something in a country where you don't understand the language, why wouldn't you get someone to explain it to you? If your friend knew what it as, either they read korean or asked someone. Or do they just buy thing without asking people? Really, you shouldn't need to be asking this. There are so many negative things I could say that I am holding back.
Whoa, vohrtex, I think that was kind of the fun of it. I went to Asia last night, and had no clue what I was eating half of the time, just pointing at pictures, and guessing. It was totally un-nerving at first, but kind of fun too. I'm sure I would freak if I found out what half of the stuff I ate in Japan was.
I LOL'd when I saw this pic. That chocolate bar is my Korean name! Pronounced Song-ee
Key word is "chocolate". If this ingredient is in the mix I will try anything once!
I would try it. This is one of the main reasons why I love traveling so much - you discover new foods.
I would most likely try a piece since I love chocolate and mushrooms, though I never tried them together...
Yes! Sound super-freaky, but I'd definitely try it.
well they put "magic" (hallucinogenic) mushrooms in chocolate bars, so this doesnt shock me. may as well.
I'm not a big fan of mushrooms to begin with so I'd have to pass!
Yeah, the first thing that I thought of was hallucinogens too.
I'm not a big fan of mushrooms, but I do like chocolate, soo... And that picture looks good.
it actually sounds healthy!
It had a funny aftertaste that I wasn't a fan of.
mdamsky - Sorry, I didn't mean to sound so crabby! For me, part of the joy is knowing what stuff is. It doesn't matter if it is street food in Malaysia or curry at a New York indian restaurant, If something tastes great I want to identify it. I have nothing against trying new foods.
My complaint is the idea of it as a gift. I think it is weird to give someone a gift while not knowing what it is.
I'd try it, because I try everything, but it doesn't sound like something I'd actually like. But I'm not huge on mushrooms.
from what i can see on the box, the chocolate is called something like "mushroom crunch" and i believe the description says it is a healthy snack loaded with almonds and peanuts
A little unsure of this one for numerous reasons.
If anyone is willing to translate, let me know and I will send you a PM with a close-up of the Korean words!
I'll translate it for you. Actually, I'll have my grandmother translate it since she's the one fluent in Korean.
I would try it, but probably wouldn't eat more than one bite and i wouldn't buy it myself
I would take a bite of it, just to see if it was any good. Sometimes ethnic foods, even if they're weird, are surprisingly tasty.
i live in korea and am heading to the DMZ next week. im gonna keep my eyes out for it. sounds interesting!
I'm so sorry this visited the office when I was out of town!
Sounds very cool! I'd love to try it.
