Although a recent report found that you can save both cash and calories by going through the self-checkout at the grocery store, some consumers have mixed feelings about scanning your own sundries. On one hand, you can bag everything to your liking, but on the other hand, the automated machines often get stuck on unseen errors. What's your take on them?

I love the self-checkout lines. Sometimes my machine messes up, but there usually is an employee there who can quickly fix the problem and sometimes if you wait a minute the problem fixes itself.
Yes, I think it's fun.
I don't have a car, so i rely on totes for my grocery shopping. I love the self-checkout because i can bag my items myself just the way i like them and for easy transporting.
Unless I'm buying a lot of fresh produce, yes.
I will, I voted the second option, but it really depends on my mood. Sometimes I find it a bit awkward.
Almost always use the self-checkout.
If their is no line , I will use it to get out quicker.
The only bad thing is that I have to bag the items myself at the self checkout. So if I have a few things, it's fine. But if I have a lot, I get really frazzled b/c the person behind me in line never waits for me to finish. They just start sending their stuff down the conveyor belt and I'm like, "I'm still here!!"
Those machines take forever!
Always if available - that way I avoid those super rude checkers.
it's my husband's pet peeve when people with a big cart full of stuff go thru self checkout and I think it's funny that people will go that far in order to avoid interacting with other humans.
that said I only use it when I don't have a ton of stuff and there is no line.
If I am buying a lot of groceries, I want them bagged for me because it is a pain to do it on the self-checkout. I also don't use the self-checkout if I am buying alcohol because you have to wait for them to "approve" it or come over and card me and it takes longer than if they are standing right in front of me.
We don't have those here.
I don't like it when they cut back on the number of cashiers when they opt for U-Scans, but there are some definite advantages to using the self-scan on occasion.
I'm a Computer Science major, but when it comes to those things I'm technology deficient... it's kinda embarrassing actually!
I go to them if I only have a few items that don't mess the machines up. For whatever reason, any time I buy bulk coffee beans, the machine makes me get a manager approval. Also, if I have any coupons or a lot of produce, I'd rather go to the regular lane because it seems that it actually goes faster that way.
I'll use self-checkout if I only have a few items. I'll never use it with coupons though, a manager has to come over and approve every single coupon. It takes forever!
I always use self checkout! I usually get upsef if a store does not offer self checkout. My debit card + self checkout = a speedy trip to the grocer.
I love self checkout. I like to bag my own groceries my way, crammed full.
Yes, anything to avoid talking to a cashier.
If I'm just grabbing a soda or a can of cat food, then yes, I'll use self-checkout. But if I have a basket full of items, I really don't have the time/patience to fumble with that stupid scanner. The one at my local A&P always freezes anyway.
My husband and I both worked in grocery stores as teenagers... and we routinely see packing errors that we'd been trained to avoid. We find it faster, more efficient, and safer to do our own packing at the self checkout. We just wish we'd get a discount for doing it ourselves!
Yes I use them and I love them. I secretly always wanted to be a checkout chick, I love the scanning, beeping, keying and swiping. Besides, I think I can actually beat the checkout chicks at their own game. I'm pretty good at it.
It has been my experience that the machine only gets stuck on "unseen errors" when the person using the machine isn't totally up to speed. Also, I am annoyed by stores which create aisles large enough for carts to be pulled through the self-check. If you can't carry it to the register, you have no business being in the self-check. Watermelons in summertime and turkeys in the winter are the only exceptions.
Self checkout only when I have a few items/no coupon/lines are shorter and preferably no produce. Otherwise I go for the reg. lines because of the coupon issue and the stores I frequent offer money back for using reusable bags off your order which you don't get in the self cheout line unfortunately. It makes a difference...
I almost always use self checkout. I bag my groceries when another person scans them, so I might as well scan them myself.
As a past cashier, I rather just do it myself. I still know all the codes and such for fruit, so easy enough.
I tend to use the Self-checkout when I have very few items. However, at times it is a case of w/e is available. In some stores they have like two manned checkouts open and four u-scans. :/
i they offered a discount i would use it otherwise im doing someone elses job
