I've seen these onion glasses all over the food world recently and even found them in our very own Yum Market! Designed to protect your eyes from the tear inducing juices of a freshly sliced onion, these goggles form a seal preventing any irritating vapors from reaching you tear ducts. The website of the goggles that TeamSugar member CiaoBella bookmarked describes them as having a hip design. I totally disagree and think they're super geeky. However I can't help but laugh when I picture someone like Gordon Ramsay wearing them while he cooks. What do you think? Onion goggles: love it or hate it?

my eyes are really really sensitive to onions, we live in a pretty small apartment and i have to go to the room furthest away from the kitchen when my mom cuts onions and even then my eyes water and sting for at least 10 mins.
I burn a small votive candle if the onion's really strong. No eye watering and no geeky headgear needed!
I think they are kind necessary for onions. Though at my catering company we use something similar for the grillers at events. Standing at a grill for 3 hours is murder on your eyes and the goggles help a lot.
I'd rather put up with the streaming eyes that buy a pair of goggles!
Ooooh I love that. My eyes always hurt so bad!
I wear glasses, so that's a no go.
I always cut my onions in half first, then run them under cold water. If you keep a dish of water near where you're chopping your onions, then you won't get that stinging watery eye thing.
The chemical that causes that is attracted to moisture, which is why it goes straight to your eyes, where there is moisture. having a bowl of water there keeps it from happening. I think I'm going to blame Alton Brown for this information. I can't really remember where I heard it first though.
I DO think they're sort of cute, but how many onions does anyone really have to cook? And will I be donning a gas mask because I can't breathe when my husband's cooking with red chiles?
Haha!! I would totally go for these, but started using my own onion goggles a few months ago.
I was so sick and tired of my eyes watering that I took an old pair of swim goggles and used those. Multi-taskers of the world unite! I now keep them in my apron pocket for quick access anytime.
Google me up baby!
A bit odd but I can see the appeal. However, I wear contacts so cutting onions is no problem for me and I'm sure popping in my contacts when I'm chopping onions is cheaper than buying goggles lol..that and my S.O would have field day if I wore those.
Haha, that's awesome!
Remember in science class when all the girls hated to put on the dorky goggles? I get the same feeling here! However, I like the idea of them since I tear up everytime I cut onions no matter how potent.
Ok, why buy these stupid looking goggles when you can just cut the onion under some running water? No tears!
I think I need these for my husband. He tears up rather badly when cutting onions.
I do think they look rather kool though.
Cutting onions under water? That's a little difficult.
Love it!
AHAHAHAHAHAH! that's hilarioussss.
Great minds think alike!!!

thats kind of nifty...but id feel like an idiot wearing them, haha.
i suppose its useful for those with sensitive eyes or rarely does anything in the kitchen. of course those who's a pro need not wear it.
even if now it looks geeky, perhaps in the near future they might come in style?
Could I be mis-remembering, or is there something about sticking a piece of bread on the end of the knife which one uses to cut onions -- and this helps reduce tears?
its a nice idea but i would never wear them.
I try running cool water and it seems to help me to not tear up as much. I would use the goggles if I were an onion lover.
Haha, they're interesting alright.
Me and my sensitive eyes would love these -- 'cause I love onions!
not sure.
No I wouldn't.
Nice.
Nice.
It's a good idea. But, I don't think I'd buy them.
My grandmother taught me to slice off both ends of the onion... peel off the shell... and drop it in a bowl of cold water for a moment to kill off the fumes. Shake off the water then slice and dice... it has always worked for me.
When I was a little younger and I did catering for a friend's company, we had something like that (shop safety glasses) in the kitchen because one of the girls was very suceptible to the sulfuric acid from onions. Nothing helped her, but the safety glasses worked.
LMAO. I actually saw some of these over the weekend!
They are too hilarious to hate! I used to have a problem with onions but I think I'm pretty okay with them now. I don't cook with them often enough to use these glasses b/c I actually don't like onions.
thats pretty funny, but its not a laughing matter when ur mascara runs and ur eyes kill! id wear it with the kitchen door locked so no one could see me, its a wicked idea lol
Luckily I don't have to cut onions very often since I don't eat them, but when I do I could sure use something to help with the stinging. Ugh.
i guess maybe i'd wear them if no one was around! i hate how much my eyes tear up. i even get teary when i cut green onions or shallots...guess i have super sensitive eyes or something.
I love the idea, because for years I've been wearing my old chemistry goggles when I chop onions, and these are better looking.
great idea but not very cute!
