I dine out with friends and family all the time, and inevitably there are always scheduling changes. When I need to cancel a reservation, add or subtract a party member in a way that would affect table count, push dinner back, or am running late, I always make sure to call the restaurant — and more often than not, they thank me for calling. Do you do the same?

i haven't had to cancel a reservation yet,but if i need to,i'll call them to let them know
1Of course! especially for higher end places that require a credit card for a reservation.
Coi in SF charges $100 for no shows. A little extreme, but I understand
2its the epitome of rudeness if you don't. it just is.
3yes - i call to cancel or change reservations but a lot of the time i use Open Table so i can just go online to make changes.
4Wow Leslie, that is extreme. It's 25 dollars where I live and nowadays that's too much for me to lose.
5Yep, it's just rude not to.
6Of course! It's plain rude not to. You reserve a table and not show up, that's loss of profit on the resturants part when they could have given the table(s) to other guests.
If I reserve and need to cancel, yes, I do call. Common sense and manners.
7I always show the same respect to people I would hope to receive in return.
8Of course! I have relationships with a lot of the host/hostesses/maitre d's around town, so I wouldn't DREAM of screwing those up! Restaurants are hard enough to get into when you're on your best behavior; not showing up and not calling is a major no-no if you ever want to get a reservation again!
9It's the considerate thing to do.
10It is common basic courtesy to call to cancel. Also, I might want to make reservations there again in the future.
11Yes its just MANNERS. Something lacking a lot in society these days. By advising the restaurant you're also allowing them to plan their seating and schedules for the night and allow a smooth running business which can also profit by allowing someone else to fill your previously reserved spot.
