While attending Julie Reiner's seminar on tropical cocktails during the Food & Wine Classic, I came to the realization that tiki drinks are sort of a love it or hate it kind of thing.
On the one hand, an icy, fruit-flavored tiki cocktail can be like having Guam in a glass — but on the flip side, many people find them to be overly cloying, rather than refreshing. When it comes to tiki drinks, is your glass half full or half empty?

It depends on how they are made. I used to love these things, but now I find them too sweet. So if I do have one I often ask them to cut back on the sweet stuff.
1SO SUMMERY to me!! I love them, maybe as much for the feeling while holding one, as for the yummy fruity taste. I can only drink one or two if theyre REAL sweet though.
2I think if they are made by a superb bartender than it doesn't matter: they will be excellent.
3Everytime I see one of those umbrellas I get the Tiki Room song in my head (the place in disneyland).
Love the drinks! I agree with moderation though. One or two and I'm down for the count on the sweetness factor. Still yummy
4OK once in a blue moon but to me they're kinda a waste of calories. Also I drank them nonstop on my honeymoon and I felt sick afterwards
5Once or twice a year, at most. If it's a good bar that offers fresh squeezed juice rather than pre-made mix, the drink isn't as cloyingly sweet. Sometimes I get a Chi-Chi, which is pretty much a pina colada, but with vodka instead of rum, which cuts down on the sweetness
6I can't drink sugary cocktails.
7I love my sugar and could try one of these.
8If I make them myself, I like them because I can control how sweet they are. If I get them at a bar, I'm not usually too crazy about them because they tend to be way too sweet.
9With a mango salsa dog.......yeah!
10Love them! Nothing says summer like a pina colada!
