Back in April, McDonald's announced plans to add a premium Angus burger to its fast-food lineup. The burger, priced at $3.99, would compete with other higher-end fast-food burgers such as Carl's Jr.'s Six Dollar Burger and Burger King's XT burger, and was scheduled to roll out nationwide by August. Well, July's barely begun, but yesterday the chain's Angus Third Pounders hit menus across the country.
The burgers, which weigh at least a third of a pound, or 5.33 ounces, before they're cooked, come in a trio of styles, all on a sesame seed bun: Deluxe, with tomato, lettuce, mustard, mayonnaise, red onions, dill pickles, and American cheese; Bacon & Cheese, with ketchup, mustard, red onions, dill pickles, American cheese, and three slices of bacon; and Mushroom & Swiss, with mayonnaise, sautéed mushrooms, and swiss cheese. See more pictures — and the results of our office taste test — when you keep reading.
Mushroom & Swiss: Although every taster agreed this burger was too salty, this selection was my favorite. Although it was heavy on mayonnaise, the gooey Swiss cheese and sautéed mushrooms tasted surprisingly authentic.
Deluxe: Although tasters couldn't agree on a favorite, there was one clear consensus: this plain Jane burger was the least favorite. "I'd rather have a Whopper," one commented. "At least I'd get the special sauce."
Bacon & Cheese: This overall favorite of the bunch had a pronounced bacon flavor and a juicy patty. While the burger was on the salty side as well, the three strips of bacon were perfectly cooked. One taster put it succinctly when he said that the quality of beef in the Angus Third Pounders was "welcome and easily discernible." The patties were larger, juicier, and had a more robust flavor, making it $4 well spent.
Do these burgers seem like something you'd try? If you've sampled them already, what are your thoughts on them?

WOH. I don't really do fast food, but that photo made my mouth water.
1Hmmm, I don't know. McD's is trying, but it still looks like a semi-flavorless McDonalds burger to me. I just don't think it's POSSIBLE for them to make an "amazing", maybe even a "good" burger because of their size. "Quality control" over something that large HAS to go to the lowest common denominator.
I'm a burger snob... I admit it.
2I love burgers. Even if it comes from a restaurant, my own grills or McDonalds. I always go to McDs instead of BK and the like, because I grew up going there. This looks pretty good to me, so I think I'll try it.
3I would devour those.
4So the patty actually tastes a little better with the bacon? Weird...
I just tried the "Deluxe" and it was okay. Better than Burger King's angus attempt, but not quite up to Hardee's/Carl's Jr.
5I tried them a few months ago in Canada. If the burgers were too salty it's probably the employee's fault who added too much spices to the patty after cooking them. I normally ask to have mine without the spices.
6In Canada they served them on a ciabatta roll and it made a huge difference. I liked them.
I would guess they are using the same patties for all the burgers though. I think the bacon one was probably only better due to luck of the draw. Like they were the ones that hadn't been sitting in the warmer for as long.
7hmm...is this a new type of angus burger or did we just happen to get them much, much sooner here? i've had these quite a few times over at least the past six months, if not more...i actually loved them until the last time i ate one, maybe a month or so ago, and felt gross afterward...now i'm off mcdonalds, at least for now...not the worst way to go
8I had a bacon cheese angus yesterday and loved it. I don't really like burgers much less McD's but was so curious after all the reviews I had to try one. I would definitely get one again.
9I'm stuffed to the max with mexican food but omg that looks wonderful.
10My favorite food is either a good steak or a burger so you can guess I have eaten some of the tastiest burgers every thing from In-N-Out burger, to Val's coffee shop in Hayward CA, where I tried the 1 pounder, five guys, Margaritaville in key west, captains two in key largo just to name a few. so when ever I try a new burger at a chain I have high standards. last week after a day of touring our nations capital and meeting Bob Dole at the WW2 memorial I headed to my hometown to try an Angus third pounder from McDonnald's I had the one with bacon and cheese. I thought it was a lot like the double quarter pounder in taste but a lot beefier and with a better bun crisp bacon and red onion on a scale of 1-10 I would rate it a 7. the next week I tried the mushroom Swiss and I thought it tasted great fresh mushrooms loads of melty Swiss cheese and gobs of Mayo just the way I like. on a scale of 1-10 I give the mushroom and Swiss a 9 all in all I liked both a lot they weren't the best burgers I have ever eaten heck the burgers don't even touch the whopper but they might be McDonnald's best creation since the cheddar melt and the Mc rib. next week I will try the deluxe and then I will go on a major diet thank you and good day....
11jelibeann -- they launched yesterday, but perhaps you lived in a test market. Lucky you!
12Yeah, we've had these since last spring where I live in NY, around an hour north of NYC. In fact, this was the burger (the deluxe angus) that brought me out of 10 years of vegetarianism. And I gotta say, it was kinda worth it. I was 8 months pregnant and wanting BEEF. I've basically gone back to eating virtually no meat again, but I did enjoy my brief beef tryst.
13nope i wouldn't have these, I can't stand mcdonalds. If i want a good burger I'll go to in and out.
14I had the bacon one a few days back. Just tasted like an over priced Quarter Pounder to me. Nothing special.
15this past weekend we were traveling back home from vacation and my boyfriend and i had mcdonalds. he had the bacon and cheese, which he enjoyed..i had a bite of it and thought it taste really good. the bacon was good on the burger as well. all in all i would say it is a good burger, and worth the try..you may not love it or be impressed, but you will enjoy and like it. next time i visit i'm deff having one.
16Busybeegal what a great story! That is hilarious.
17@ busybeegal, I think a brief beef tryst sounds a lot better than a beef brief tryst. Ew...
18i do not eat any fast food...but when i do indulge a few times a year it is always mcdonalds. i usually get a kids chicken nugget meal and/or a double cheeseburger... yummy. i will for sure indulge in the angus burger when i have a "free" day
19I actually tried the mushroom and swiss a couple months ago in Kansas, apparently that was a mcD's where they were testing the popularity, it was reallly good and I normally avoid mcd's at all costs, but I think I'm gonna go out and grab one right now.
20i work there and i think.....there all sick. mushroom and Swiss is nasty.....the mushroom's are smelly. but i don't care for any thing there. you should all YouTube it how it's made.....and really think about the kind-of peeps who work there?? they don't care at all. stop being lazy cook your own food its better for you. this is why people are fat. because they eat fast food. its sick to see a car and know what there get before there even say anything.
21I just had my first one, The Bacon Cheese. I thought it had a funny taste to it.
22Can't quite place it? I wonder if they put anything in the patty?
although i work at mc donalds the fisrt week of the third pounders i tried each burger as each comes. i tired the mushroom and swiss fisrt it was better tasted then smelled. i tried the beacon and cheese burger second and no lie it was awsome!!!! the delux just had too much of everything on it i had to make that a left over.. overall i liked them all. and plus i can make them all.
23wait- so someone said the bacon one tasted like the double qp, but MORE beefy? Even though there's less beef? Is it because of the stronger taste of the angus or soemething? Anyone else feel like these are better? I was almost tempted into getting one when I realized the double qp should be more filling, and that's what I usually get, haha.
24If Angus refers to the preferred breed of cattle for beef in America, why are we just now hearing about using the Angus beef with our fast food chains? Also, if each only offers a few angus burgers, what are the other burgers on the menu made of? I think the first to just replace the entire beef menu with Angus (black or red) will win the burger battle.
