Ball Ice Cream Maker: Love It Or Hate It

During a recent Off To Market challenge I asked you to help me find an ice cream maker. Both sis1825 and celebrity_soup found this unusual, colorful ice cream maker that doubles as a ball you can actually play with. Called the Play & Freeze ice cream maker, this gadget allows you to make ice cream anywhere as no electricity is needed. Instead, your sporty energy is what makes the ice cream: as you shake, pass, roll, and kick the ball, the ice cream gets churned. I'm not too crazy about the concept - after I work out the last thing I want to do is eat ice cream - but think it would make for a great party game at a child's birthday. What do you guys think: Ball ice cream maker: love it or hate it?

Looks like a fancy hamster exercise ball! I think it's a neat idea.

I think it encourages people to work for their treats, so I like it.

I remember coffee can ice cream when I was a kid, and I always thought it was worth the work. This is the same sort of thing. I don't really think its a product intended for adults, at least not adults without children. If it was, it probably wouldn't be so fun looking, it would be more austere, and probably have some sort of floral pattern on it, since we all know, dudes totally wouldn't fall for it. Thats why convenience products are marketed towards dudes.

So, yeah. I think its cool.

The only thing is, I wish they had a padded cover or something, so we could kick it around. It looks too fragile for anything more than just gently rolling it.

My hubby and I have one of these. I like it, but it takes a long time for it to turn into ice cream.

We bought one for my husband's sister. It was about 90 degrees out at 9pm when we tried making it, I think that had something to do with it not working too well. It did partially make ice cream but we gave up on it and ate the smooshy cream instead. Smiling Definitely I think it's meant for a cooler day!

I have one of these and it's more fun in theory than in reality. I had friends over for dinner and we were going to make ice cream and it was so loud when you shook it that we couldn't have a conversation while we were rolling/tossing the ball! That said, I've only used it twice...

Haha yeah! then you have to work for it!
Tho Im also concerned about whether it works well. And I would be afraid that it would suddenly pop open after a kick and all the cream would drop on my foot. . . . .

My mother uses coffee cans to make ice cream with her special ed. kids to have fun, work on some motor skills, and, well, make ice cream!

I thought about getting her one of these, but she had turned her nose up upon seeing one at REI and said that reusing a coffee can was just as good.

I thought it was a hamster ball at first too!!!
And I, as an adult, would totally use it- for making ice cream that is, not as a hamster ball!

I have one, and it's really fun to use. They don't warn you about how heavy the thing gets when it's filled with ice cream ingredients, so we ended up doing more rolling than throwing or shaking. When we got tired, we threw the whole ball in the freezer for a few minutes to finish it off, and the ice cream had a good texture after that. I don't use it as much now because I live on the second floor and am scared of what my downstairs neighbors would think if I accidentally dropped it!

Well the bonus is that if the ice cream is taking its-own-sweet-time to set you will burn some extra calories!!!!

Me - I have a little electric ice cream maker and I only make low fat, agave sweetened sorbets.

    Just kidding!!!!!
