Next month, some of my friends are making the trek out to Sacramento from the Bay Area to hit up the California State Fair, where a number artists — including one of my favorite country music stars — is performing. But the state fair doesn't have to put on an elaborate musical production to get me to show up; I'd be there for the food alone! After all, who can say no to mile-high strawberry daiquiris, elephant ears, garlic fries, and those giant smoked turkey legs?
My personal can't-miss item at any festival or fair is the funnel cake, which I always get because I'll never make it at home. What do you enjoy at Summer fairs?

Garlic fries you say? I've never heard of such a thing. I'm intrigued!
1Elephant ears! They have them all over the Midwest, which is where I grew up. Now I live in California, and I was so disappointed to find that they didn't have any at the Orange County Fair in Costa Mesa. I had to settle for a fried snickers and some fried oreos instead
2I'm still on a hunt for the ever-elusive deep-fried Coke.
3The Wisconsin State Fair is coming up and every year I like, HAVE TO HAVE a cream puff. They are to-die-for good and you can only get them once a year.
At the county fair (ours is next week!) I love getting cotton candy and eating it with my husband. I mean, you can get it year-round in the bags but there's no comparison to the fresh stuff right out of the machine.
4Hand-dipped corn dogs. I used to always get kettle corn at the fair but now I don't because it seems to be everywhere!
5I'm with bluebell on the corn dogs! And...BACON. On a stick!
6I always get an elephant ear with cinnamon and sugar. So delicious!
7Hand dipped corn dogs, for sure! Covered in mustard. Mmmmmmm.
8Ahhhh You got me on the giant smoked turkey leg!!!
9being a vegetarian Fair lover (labour day weekend, cant wait!) for me it's mini sugar donuts, corn on the cob and apples (hahaha not the typical fair food eh!)
10I always get a funnel cake and share it with my daughter and husband. Then we take a bag of cotton candy home. Also if they are giving any samples inside then I'll try those of course!
11My must haves are funnel cake, corn dogs, cotton candy and kettle corn. And I have been dying to try fried Twinkies,Oreos and ice cream : P
12I have to say, it completely mystifies me why you can only get fair food at fairs (and not a supermarkets or restaurants). Where else can you get funnel cake? Or a giant turkey leg that you gnaw into, caveman-style? Is that done on purpose by the powers that be so that, when you actually do make it to a fair, you have an intense craving for fair food? I just don't get it!
13Oh...and you can't forget carmel apples!!!
14Anything fried on a stick
15mini donuts!
16Funnel cake and cotton candy
17roasted corn and elephant ears or funnel cake sundaes
18I used to go to the fair a lot and now there are no good ones near me; I miss it. Anyway, here's my list:
19-funnel cakes
-elephant ears
-fried swiss cheese
-fair fries (I swear, there's something about them that makes them different.)
-fair lemonade
-frozen bananas
-DiRusso's Italian Sausage
-shaved potato chips (I don't really know how else to describe these, but they are delicious!)
-4-H milkshakes
lilkimbo, I'm dying to know what shaved potato chips and fried Swiss cheese taste like.
20Have to have my roasted corn on the cob and frozen lemonade. And then I usually try something new.
