In a story that's still developing, the Department of Health has shut down the famous Magnolia Bakery. Apparently it's a lack of sinks - and not rats - that has caused the shut down. Guess you'll just have to make Magnolia cupcakes at home until it reopens.
Update: Magnolia has issued an official statement stating that they've operated for 10 years without this sink.
Update 2: The Department of Health has allowed Magnolia to reopen now that they've installed a new sink.

Wow. Im sure a lot of people are upset over this!
1I think the Department of Health should be responsible for letting consumers know the reasons behind any closure. Just shutting something down doesn't help anyone.
2CRAZY!!!! I love their cupcakes! Mostly, they're just really, really pretty
3A lack of sinks can shut down a business? Good grief.
4Wow! Every time I'm in NYC I go there for their cupcakes. Hope they're able to reopen soon!
5well, if they wash their hands in the same sink as say, the dish washing sink, it could cause a cross contamination. i guess it makes sense. i'm just hoping it will be open again by the time i come back to new york in a few weeks.
6i'm a little confused. how can they not have a sink? where do they wash their hands?
7ktown - the apparently need 2 sinks and only have one.
8you know... there's another bakery in town that was started by one of the co-founders of Magnolia. they have the SAME cupcakes.... if you've ever been on the sex and the city tour, you'll know what im talking about...
9Crazy, hope it gets up and running again soon. I tried the recipe listed on this site for the cupcakes one time, whoa, sug-a-ry!
10speaking of cupcakes...what about Burgers & Cupcakes? anybody from NY been there?
11a sink is what cause them to close.....:\ thats stupid!!
12But they will reopen eventually, right?
13Hm.. after reading the story and two updates, that was a rather pointless event. I'd be more worried about whether companies actually use their sinks.
14omg thank god you posted this yumsugar, I am going to NYC in like a month!
