The other day my sister told me how she had been to a wine tasting and they were giving away free bunches of lavender. I was incredibly jealous because 1) I didn't partake in the wine tasting and 2) I didn't have a fragrant bouquet of lavender in my room. Lavender or lavandula as it's scientifically known, is considered to be one of the most versatile flowers in the world and is used in everything from foods to medicines to aromatic/essential oils. Lavender is characterized by gray-green foliage with thin spikes of purple flowers on long stems. One of the oldest plants, lavender grows wildly all over the earth. 
Lavender blooms in the full summer sun and requires plenty of water at regular intervals - allowing time in between for the soil to dry. To encourage stronger root production, cut off the first year buds and protect the blooms from wind. Wonderful in gardens, lavender can be planted in containers, flowerbed borders, and used as ground cover. Lavender pairs nicely with sage and is one of the only flowers that retains its fragrance after drying.

I love the smell of Lavender, and...esp....Yardley's Lavender Soap!!! Has anyone smelled it before? Its what they use at Outback Steakhouse's Ladies room! also, i had some yardley lavender bath salts given to me when i was little and it ia scent i have hooked onto.
1I grow lavender all over my garden. You can use it in food, too. I've made lavender cupcakes and lavender lemonade. You make the sugar for the lemonade by adding lavender buds (and some lemon or orange zest) to sugar and letting it sit in an airtight container. It's great in tea, too!

3Am I the only gal on the planet that can't stand the stuff? There's something about the smell that drives me crazy. It is lovely in lemonade and frostings, but I'd rather have it without.

11Lavender vodka is easy to make too- just pour a bottle of vodka into a mason jar with about a quarter cup of lavender flowers. Be sure to check it often so the taste doesn't get overwhelming, I think my infusion only took a couple of hours. I've used it to make cocktails at a bridal shower, but it could be lovely in all sorts of settings.
Weird story, non-vodka related: when I was pregnant, I didn't crave food that much, but I craved scents. The scent of lavender was one of my main cravings, I had to have lavender flowers near my bed so I could inhale deeply at any moment!

13Supposedly, if you hang lavender by your door it will keep the flies out of your house. Alternatively you can rub lavender oil around the doorway.
