I was super excited when the movie Spanglish came out a few years ago. After all, it features two of my great loves: food and Spanish! It was actually a disappointment to me - Tea Leoni's character ruined the entire movie for me - but the scene where Adam Sandler's character makes himself a delicious looking sandwich and pairs it with a cold glass of beer has stood out in my mind. At the time, I remember thinking, man that looks good. Little did I know that it was what the director, James L. Brooks, was going for! In his stage directions, he stated that the main character would make a snack viewers will remember and copy. In order to do so, he turned to America's most famed culinary mind, Thomas Keller, and asked him to create a sandwich that would entice the audience. Keller, who helped Sandler prepare for the movie, came up with what may be the most simple, best tasting sandwich ever: a jazzed up version of a BLT. To watch the trailer (it includes the sandwich part!) and see the recipe, read more

Spanglish's Sandwich
From Thomas Keller
4 thick slices of bacon
2 slices of Monterey Jack cheese
2 thick slices of rustic white bread, toasted and hot
1 tablespoon mayonnaise
4 tomato slices
2 leaves of butter lettuce
1 teaspoon unsalted butter
1 large egg
- In a skillet, cook the bacon over moderate heat, turning, until crisp, about 8 minutes. Transfer to paper towels to drain.
- Set the Monterey Jack slices on 1 piece of toast. Spread the mayonnaise on the other slice of toast, then top with the bacon, tomato and lettuce.
- In a small, nonstick skillet, melt the butter. Add the egg and fry over moderate heat, turning once, until crisp around the edge, about 4 minutes; the yolk should still be runny.
- Slide the egg onto the lettuce; close the sandwich and eat right away.
Makes 1 sandwich.

This wasnt a half bad movie. The sandwich looks great.
1I hated the movie and could not wait for it to end, but I remember salivating over the sandwich! I remember Adam Sandler's character could not enjoy it because of all the bickering around him...
2Never seen this film, and I'm not an egg fan but this sandwich looks amazing. I think this is what I'll be having at some point this week!
3The movie was way too long, but it had nice moments. Unlike "Click" which is so bad Adam Sandler should be in San Quentin. Meanhwile, that sandwich looks yuuuummmeers.
4I never saw this movie but wish I had for this delicious sandwich!! I bet it stole the show! I have to make one now!
5Like the movie and love the sandwich. I've only made it for myself once though -- crazy delicious.
6My Dad has ALWAYS made his BLT's with egg. SUPER nummy!
7I saw and liked the movie. This is an egg & cheese sandwich. Been eating them since I was a little girl as did my parents and their parents. This sandwich is nothing new. It does make me hungry for one though.
8Isn't a BLT with egg a Monte Cristo? I think that's what Sandler calls it in the movie.
9That looks so good! I saw Spanglish on the weekend, and watching Adam put it together was making me want one.
10It looks like something my boyfriend would LOVE as an improptu weekend meal
11Oh I love footing eggs in my sandwiches. I actually liked this movie even though yes Leoni ruined it for me. I wish they could just left Adam's character single and fell in love with the Spanish girl. Anyways with that said I know what I'm having for lunch tomorrow.
12A Monte Cristo is a Ham and Swiss, dipped in egg batter then deep fried.
13Oh, man, that looks super-delish!!
14That sandwich is pretty much the only thing I remember from that movie.
15the sandwich is all i remember from the movie too! i specifically remember watching the movie, wondering how to make the it, then finding the recipe in the extras. very smart folks, i'd say.
16I love this movie. And this part of the movie always makes me want that sandwich
17I don't like eggs.
18Mmm..
19Oh, I remember this sandwich. All of the food he made was amazing in that movie. I, as well, hated Tea Leoni's character too. And it's a shame because I normally really like her, but I just thought her character was horrible.
I remember though the part I thought was funny was when she was riding in the convertible, and her hair is all kinds of in her face and she is b*tching about not being a girl who can ride in a convertible, and the guy just does two things and fixes it. LOL
20I need to stop coming here and looking at this picture. It's sooo tempting!
21That sandwich looks really yummy. It's the perfect cross between a BLT and a breakfast sandwich. I would make this for lunch, but I have no lettuce... I wonder if I could substitute basil.
22if i tried to make it, it wouldnt turn out anything remotly close to that
23Haha how funny you should post this, I watched this movie for the first time the other day and was completley drooling over this sandwich!
24after seeing this, i made the sandwich. It was delicious, but its important to have THICK bread because its so messy and huge.
25i can appreciate the darkness of that movie, but i too detested tea leoni's character to the point that i couldn't bear to watch the movie again. which saddened me.
this sandwich, however, does not. yummmmm...
