I'm a lifelong vegetarian, woman and veggie wiener fan. I don't get it.

i don't see it as much of a big deal. i am a vegetarian and a feminist, and i really think PETA just tries to do new/exciting/shocking things at every opportunity. i don't think that's necessarily a bad thing... they're just trying to stay in the public eye. honestly, i see this as just kind of playful and amusing. i don't think it needs to be taken so seriously to offend people. they're just trying to be suggestive and eye-catching while delivering their pro-vegetarian message. i don't find it offensive, and i'm certainly a feminist.

I don't know that it offends me, but this event does rub me a little the wrong way every year.

On the other hand, I love not dogs. I only wish I could find them here!! The best I can do here is organic wheat-fed beef uncured hot dogs. Yummy, but I love not dogs.

Oh, and I will say that this kind of sums up what I don't like about PETA. I get that they certainly champion a worthy cause, but it does seem that they are willing to champion their cause at the expense of pretty much everything else.

If designers on Project Runway made these lettuce bikinis during the "Make Clothing Out of Food" challenge, no one would call it offensive or sexist. The fact is that its really clever. Lettuce leaves are often used to make cups, so why not make bra cups out of them?

On the aspect that the ad is affiliated with Playboy and therefore inherently sexist, that may be true, but Playboy Playmates are Playmates out of their own volition. It is their job to cater to masculinist desires.

As for the effectiveness of the ad, we all know that vegetarianism is not rampant among American men, so if there's one way to get them to trade in the occasional steak for a veggie dog, it may be by showing their ideal woman eating them.

I don't find it offensive at all! The women in the picture have more coverage than most women wear at the beach. I think its fun. Anyway, whats the difference between Playboy and Victoria Secret where most girls buy their panties. Playboy should be commended for taking a stand and promoting a good cause.

I personally don't see anything wrong with the lettuce ladies. Vegetarianism has always been considered to be pretty feminine, and anything that can open guys up to the idea of it is probably a good thing. Nothing is a better selling point to men than hot girls haha, so I think it's a great idea.

However, this approach works for women too. These are really healthy looking girls, that I'm sure a lot of women would love to look like. They aren't grossly skinny like a lot of people (well, people in hick towns like where I am haha) assume vegetarians will be. I'm sure there are some women out there who will see them, and think "maybe I will be able to look like that if I become a vegetarian." Whether that's a good thing or not, it's brilliant marketing, so +1 point.

Overall, go team lettuce ladies.

What's wrong with Playboy? More power to ladies who can look good wearing lettuce and eating veggie dogs! It's better publicity than a lot of the weird stuff PETA does. Why can't Playmates promote vegetarianism?

i used to be a member of peta but now i think they are ridiculous. i am still a vegetarian (and love veggie hot dogs, yves are the best) and still support animal rights, but i think peta just exploits women to try to get their point across. it's stupid.

I'm all for not abusing animals but sometimes PETA can be just so commercial and over the top. I like my meat, but I also like my veggies, tofu is good sometimes, and I adore soy. The ad to me looks trashy and provocative. It's exploitive and just blah, plus they look stupid like that (for obvious reasons). On another note, I don't eat regular hot dogs I find them disgusting especially the whole mystery meat aspect. If I do eat them I go for a veggie dog or kosher.

I agree with emilyplayscello. I am no longer a vegetarian (although I"m trying to get back on that!) but am a feminist. Those girls have rights, its the animals who don't. Animals aren't asked whether they'd like to become someone's lunch and raised in really terrible conditions. Those woman had the right not to pose. Anyway, I'm all for it...We need to eat less meat as a society!

LOL I think it's funny. It's not harming anyone. It's a way to get people's attention. At least those women aren't naked.

By the way, if I could wear a lettuce bikini (biodegradable AND compostable!), I totally would. Now that I think of it, compostable clothing is a great idea for people who can't stand to wear the same outfit twice!!! We can sell this idea to Posh and Fitsugar (love you)!!

What PETA does a lot of times to get attention is using naked or mostly naked women. There are other ways to get attention.

Personally, I wouldn't go near anyone naked or nearly naked on the street; especially if it had to do with food. I think a person in a big comical lettuce outfit would attract more attention. They could give out free bottles of water, a pack of chips and the veggie hotdogs. Hell, they could even have a carnival type atmosphere and get kids to ask Mommy and Daddy to go over.

I have not had a veggie-dog but I bet they taste good. Veggie burgers are kind of bleh to me, but all the salt usually makes hotdogs yummy! (Yes, I know salt is bad for you but since I don't put it in or on my food I figure the occasional hotdog or chipdip is ok!) I am not a vegetarian although I try to limit my meat intake.

Also, the bottoms of their outfits are gross.

I may be totally wrong, but it seems to me that more women than men are apt to try this or be a vegetarian. Why use Playboy models? To get male attention? That's nice - but I don't think that guys really take those bunnies seriously. Do they? *shrug*

I guess what I'm trying to say folks is that it really disgusts me the way that PETA needs to use obvious sexist means to promote their message. If they feel they have a strong enough message (which I'm pretty sure they do feel that way), why stoop to such a gimmick? It's not like they're launching a new brand, they have a point and a statement they are trying to make and it's getting lost. This stunt says to me, "the only way people care about animal rights is if we have boobies involved." - i know it happens in advertising all the time but "the only way people care about this beer is if we have boobies involved" is very different to me. - my words may have been a bit harsh - and they really should have been voiced towards the stunt, not the lettuce - but i just find the whole thing ridiculous.

I don't know if I find it offensive or not, but I do know that I love veggie dogs! I was out of the country for a few years and I wasn't able to get all my faux-meat products. It was one of my happiest return-home-events to have all my veggie stuff again!
