Friendly, twist off bottle caps may quickly become a thing of the past. Large brewery Sierra Nevada, recently switched to a new "pry-off" bottle top, and it's likely that other beer producers will follow suit.
The new pry-off caps offer increased oxygen barrier over other materials commonly used in bottle cap lines.
Apparently these caps, that require a bottle opener, are more environmentally friendly and will keep beer fresher longer. Looks like it's the beginning of the end for twist off caps.
I keep a beer bottle opener on my key chain, but how about you guys? Got any great tips for prying off a bottle cap without an opener??

Just need strong teeth!
1a [cigarette] lighter!
2I'm with you, bottle opener always on keychain!
3Generally, with beer in glass bottles, I can put the cap in the palm of my hand and twist them off without a problem, (except for the occasional slip when the bottle's kinda damp). I'm not so sure I'll like these new caps. But if it means fresher beer and it's environmentally-friendly, I guess I'll keep an open mind about it.
4Sierra Nevada just keeps getting better and better !
5I agree, a lighter is the second best thing to open a bottle with.
6yeah a lighter works pretty well... but you can use almost anything with an edge...
7I've never tried a lighter. My husband has plumber hands, so he can just use his shirt and yank the cap off. Although I don't drink anymore, so it's been quite a while since he's had to do that for me.
8No great tips! We just have bottle openers in important places in the house - kitchen and family room!
9I love my twist-off Rolling Rocks! But I did see this You Tube video of a guy using folded paper as a bottle opener. It really worked.
10My boyfriend has a drawer in the kitchen that I turned into a 'bottle opener' by utilizing the drawer handle. Works great and the boys were uber impressed with my drunken creativity.
11I keep a bottle opener on my keys but otherwise I use the corner of a kitchen worktop - preferrably not mine
12when i was in Jamaica, all the locals just used water bottles to do it. i was very impressed when my husband was able to do it as well once we got home! same theory as the lighter i guess!
13my dad uses his wedding ring... well he tries... it's funny watching his face when he's attempting it.
14My ex boyfriend used to use the edge of a counter or bar to sort of slam it off...even if it was a twist cap, I think he thought he looked cool doing it!
15When I was in residence everyone just used the metal piece on the door frame where the locking mechanism met the frame. It stuck out about half an inch, so if you rested the cap on top of it and hit it with your hand it would pop off. It took a while to perfect that!
16I have used the door jam as well, but I usually end up with half the beer on the floor - such a waste!
17I have this really cool ZooYork belt that the buckle is actually a bottle opener... Trendy and convenient
18I always get nervous when people do the slam-really-hard-against-a-table thing. I just picture broken glass everywhere.
19I too have the bottle opener on a keychain. I had no idea there was actually a reasoning behind twist off v. no twist off bottle caps. Interesting.
20I opened a beer for my bf once when we first started dating, using the door method and he was so shocked at my un-lady like behavior! You do have to be super careful though, because you can, like KWM mentioned, pour half your bottle on the floor. Ewwww ...
21All I drink are beers that require bottle openers, but I don't have any tips. I just have an awesome bottle opener on my keychain:

Definitely a better looking alternative to those aluminum things.
22Ahh - My hometown brewery makes me so proud.
