A few weeks ago in the Kitchen Goddess group on TeamSugar there was an interesting discussion of food related tips. Tchan01 is new to the culinary world and asked the goddess' for their fabulous secrets and helpful hints. Eaker pointed out that unwaxed, unflavored dental floss works perfectly to split a cake in two. According to her, it's much easier than sawing through it with a knife. It's an exceptional tip and keeping dental floss in the kitchen and not just the bathroom is a must do. Use the dental floss to tie up rolled meats instead of kitchen twine. I always forget to buy kitchen twine and when that happens, the floss certainly does come in handy!
How about you: Got another crafty use for floss in the kitchen?

awesome idea
i use floss to floss teeth ... lol
1dental floss is a fave of mine in the kitchen- it works wonders to split hard boiled eggs, when making deviled eggs it's such a breeze!
2Yay! I knew something useful!
3Why can't you use waxed dental floss to cut a cake? Personally I HATE unwaxed floss. It always comes apart and then I have little threads stuck in my teeth. *shudder*
Floss also can be used as string in beading. You can use it to make a necklace or bracelet.
4Haha I first saw someone do this last year to cut a cake!! It is a great idea
5The hotel where I got married used fishing line to cut our cake. It's cheap, mess-free and quick!
6oh yes, this is a great tip.
7I'm buying some floss for the kitchen today. I have a hard time finding kitchen twine -- they don't stock it at the local store and I can't bring myself to order it and pay shipping.
While I'm on it, does anyone know the difference between kitchen twine and a ball of string from the hardware store?
8tundrababe: You could use waxed floss if you prefer it but I'm concerned about it leaving a waxy residue on your cake or meat. Especially if it's heated, I personally would worry about the wax melting into my stuffed BBQ pork tenderlion. I did a search on the web and some sites prefer waxed while others prefer unwaxed, so it's really up to you. Although I'll be using the unwaxed!
9fantastic for cutting the proverbial cheese.
10Doesn't the floss melt when you cook a roast?
11I'd like to try cutting a cake this way
12if only Bridget Jones had some of this around - she wouldn't have had blue soup!!!
13cut logs of soft squishy goat cheese
14I use it to cut anything soft, like a roll of cookie dough to make cookies, soft cheeses, gound beef to make individual burgers, etc.
15It's perfect for sewing on buttons. Just loop it through with a needle and tie it off in a knot. Waxed doesn't stay though. I keep it in a sewing kit. The buttons stay forever!!
16Very handy...and hygienic.
