A fellow Sugar staffer recently shared stories about her raw meat woes. She can't look at — or touch — raw meat without getting grossed out and feeling nauseated. In particular, skin-on chicken makes her skin crawl, and the juice from red meat leaves her queasy. This got me to wondering: how many of you feel the same way?

Personally I don't think you should eat meat if you can't handle it raw or at least be realistic about where it comes from. With my wildlife background I have done animal necropsies while being a vegetarian, but the flesh wasn't why I didn't eat meat. Actually helping hunter friends prep an animal was an impetus for me to eat some grilled flesh.
1i'm realistic about where meat comes from that i eat but i really don't like touching it raw. I do. But it still grosses me out sometimes.
2Yes .... and that's why I don't eat it.
3I saw Poltergeist when I was a kid, the raw meat grossed me out.
I have since gotten over it.
4I answered no, but I will say that raw chicken sort of weirds me out. But I also think part of that is my butchery/knife skills. If I was more knowledgeable about how to butcher said chicken, I wouldn't be as weirded out and novice feeling.
5No, doesn't gross me out at all. I always thought the chicken skin felt kinda cool.
6I don't have a problem with it. A friend of mine hates touching raw meat, though. Works out for me 'cause when we cook together, I'll prep the meat and she'll prep the onions (something I hate doing!)
7Besides sometimes not liking the feel of chicken, I don't care that much. It's not that odd.
8even more than cooked meat does
9Nope not at all. I don't mind handling raw meat.
10I totally agree with my fellow posters who said if you can't touch it/look at it raw, then you shouldn't (and don't deserve) to eat it.
You must respect what you it in all things, don't try and pretend its not a dead animal when that is exactly what it is. I used to be vegetarian, I am no longer, but I can't stand people who don't like touching raw meat, or eating whole fish or whole whatever because it looks like the dead animal it is.
11*must respect what you 'eat' in all things.
sorry, typo
12I only get grossed out when I have to buy packaged raw meat, since there could be germs on the packaging from transport. I always grab a plastic bag and use it as a glove to pick up packaged meat.
Handling meat for cooking doesn't bother me.
13I'm totally the opposite. My favorite part of making burgers or meatloaf is when I get to mush the raw meat in my hands!
14Party, I agree. There is something about the sensation of it that is so gratifying.
15I'll even eat raw beef. Not Yumsugar but Yumsteaktartare.
16Bacon feels right at whatever lever!!!!!!!!
17I don't like it, so I cook vegetarian a lot. I am actually also not that big into the taste of meat. If it wasn't for ham and meat products like chicken stock, I think I could easily be a vegetarian.
The worst for me is making roast chicken. To have to stick my hand in the carcass to stuff it really freaks me out. I can deal with steak, ground beef and chicken breast most of the time though. But a whole chicken, I don't know why but it just reminds me of a human baby. It's creepy. But I make it every few month, so I can then use the carcass to make chicken stock.
And to the people who say people like me don't DESERVE to eat meat. I am sorry but that's not right. Everybody can eat whatever they want. We live in a free society.
18There are certain things I don't eat though - I don't eat veal or lamb or goose pate because for me those are not animals I want to eat. With grown up pigs, cows and chicken I have no problem eating them though. Could I kill them myself? No.
doesnt bother me, in fact I eat raw ground beef all the time.
Just be glad that we live in a society where you dont really have to handle raw meat at all if you dont want too, back in the day with that attitude you would have starved to death.....
19I hate touching or dealing with raw meat - but I do it anyways
20Raw meat really only grosses me out when I smell it. Touching it doesn't bother me. But the smell of it is starting to get to me so much I'm considering becoming a vegetarian.
21No, but, depending on the time of the month, the smell can bother me.
22As a country girl I have plenty of respect and knowledge about meat and have butchered my own chickens and ducks that I raised - that said I can't stand chicken skin and I don't like prepping the meat, poultry, fish, shellfish or other animals I eat - my hubby does all that work for me now. The worst part is all the fat. Happy Eating!
23beef, no, chicken, yes. however we boil chicken for our dog so I don't really have a choice, I get to handle it pretty often.
24Raw meat doesn't gross me out at all. I would have no problem butchering animals to eat them, like my grandma used to have to do when they had their farm. I deal with gross stuff at work all the time, so anything bloody/gross doesn't really bug me much.
25I can handle it, but I don't think it's very pleasant. I avoid touching it as much as I can.. partly because I know it's more sanitary that way.
26For some strange reason, i can stick my hands in a raw turkey, but raw chicken makes me gag.
I don't have a problem with all meats, it is just some things. I used to be a hardcore vegetarian, and the blood that comes along with it still weirds me out. It is still a little difficult for me to know that I am eating animals, so I just try to put it out of my mind, but I cook it and I deal with it, and the reason I eat it is because I was really unhealthy when I was a vegetarian and I have become MUCH healthier since eating meat and would NEVER go back. If people don't like that, too bad, I just don't like to think that things died, bled and suffered for me to have a meal-the reason I was a vegetarian, so I like to get meat without skin, deal with as little raw meat as possible, and try not to deal with packaging that has blood in it. Its just creepy and thats how I feel.
27Just reading this/ seeing this picture gives me goosebumps
28i hate dealing with conventional, mass-produced meat. i hate thinking about the possible contamination; about the fact that parts of hundreds of cows went into that one package of ground beef; about the animals getting force fed corn and soybeans; about how the blood seeps out of the meat as it turns gray because its been sitting in the packaging for a week. all that stuff makes handling meat gross to me. but, i have no problem handling super fresh meat that comes from a source i trust and that i know was raised and killed humanely.
29I'm not a big fan of steak as a food, so seeing it raw especially squicks me out. Chicken I can deal with, it's just red meat that I'm not a fan of. I'm sure once I actually start cooking more for myself I'll get over the red meat thing.
30The only raw meat that actually grosses me out to the point where I even try to avoid eating it cooked is raw ground meat. ew.
31i use to love rare meat now its med rare
32Raw meat grosses me out.
33Chicken and turkey totally gross me out, especially the skin. I don't usually eat it for this reason, but red meat doesn't bother me much. The only thing that skeeves me out is the smell of raw hamburger. I have to have my burger well done or I'm convinced I can smell it.
34I'm a vegetarian, but no, raw meat does not gross me out. Your fellow sugar girl sounds like a primadonna.
35mostly its only red meat, plus i never eat red meat coz i don't like the taste or texture- just chicken
36I don't like touching it, but I do. What really bothers me is thinking about bacteria. I get out some diluted bleach spray when I'm done and I wash my hands in the hottest water I can stand. I still feel like I didn't clean well enough though!
37Smacks83: "...if you can't touch it/look at it raw, then you shouldn't (and don't deserve) to eat it..... I can't stand people who don't like touching raw meat, or eating whole fish or whole whatever because it looks like the dead animal it is. "
Wow, maybe you shouldn't be so judgmental of other people - saying you "can't stand" people based on how they feel about something is a little much. So if I don't like the feel of raw meat, I "don't deserve" to eat it? A little self-righteous, no?
38It's disgusting. I'm a vegetarian but I do make meat for the rest of my family. Even when I ate meat, I hated touching raw ground meat, or taking the skin off chicken. And then you have to disinfect everything it touches. Ick!
39I am a vegetarian wannabee. I can't cook meat that well without huge anxiety over the process. My cooking skills with meat are limited. If you don't handle it properly you run the risk of food poisoning. Temperatures have to be just right. Something about all that just doesn't sit right with me. And I have to agree, touching raw meat makes me want to gag.
