In honor of today being National Coffee Day, I thought I'd ask all you coffee lovers out there how far you'd go for a good brew. At more than $100 a pound, kopi luwak, also known as civet coffee, likely takes the title of the world's most expensive coffee. But it also holds the title of world's only twice-consumed coffee.
Before you've enjoyed it, it's been consumed by the palm civet, a cat-sized mammal native to Southeast Asia. The civet, or luwak, eats fresh coffee berries, which are collected by coffee specialists after they've been excreted. The beans are then washed in spring water and sold as coffee.
According to civet coffee connoisseurs, the animal's digestive enzymes help to mellow out the acidity, causing it to taste mild and smooth. I think I could give it a try — so long as you didn't tell me what it was first. What about you? Have you ever tried civet coffee?

My problem is not the origin or the method of "production," if you will. My problem is the price tag. That stuff is expensive!
1Don't tell me what it is before I drink it. I thought this was hilarious in the "Bucket List".
2I'm pretty adventurous and I love coffee, but I doubt I'd try it once I knew where it came from.
3my question is who saw a civet excrete a coffee bean and thought "maybe I should eat that?"
4u guys should give it a shoot...its a good coffee
5ewwwww!!
6this "shiz" is just amazing marketing. when observed by food scientists at the university of guelph, this coffee is no different than the non fecal variety. the taste difference is just perceived.
7If I didn't have to pay $100/lb for it, I'd try it. I'll try anything once.
8This is ROBUSTA coffee..it's the crap that makes up Folgers. Robusta is Robusta..it can't be drinkable. It's one of those fad things like Pinkberry or Starbucks or Peet's. It will go away when people wake up and realize it's just crap on a stick.
9I would definitely try it. Why not?
10I'd try it if I didn't have to buy it.
11Do all Kopi Luwak taste the same?
Not at all! Is very important to know from which area the Kopi Luwak comes from. Luwaks eat the coffee from the plantations near their habitats. So you can find Robusta Kopi Luwak or Arabica Kopi Luwak. The best coffee will be the one collected from the good quality Arabica coffee plantations. Let’s say that Sumatran Kopi Luwak is different than the Balinese one because the Arabica beans coffee from where they are made, also taste different.
In colonial times in Indonesia, the Dutchmen don't allow local farmers to consume the coffee harvested in "their" plantations so, they collect the beans found in the floor (the civet pooh) and finally realize that the coffee made with them taste better than the normal one.
All scientific analysis confirm that Kopi Luwak is not dangerous for health. Dr. Marcone said that as a scientist, he doubted about the safety of a product which has been in contact with excrement but his final tests show that due to the thorough washing process the quantity of pathogen organisms in the beans is insignificant. Whatever the washing process misses the roasting and brewing process will make up for.
