Recently, I laughed out loud while reading an article about a flu-shot clinic held at a wine bar. The wine-and-flu-shot setup got me thinking about restaurants that serve other functions along with their food. In San Francisco, you can grab a beer while you run your laundry load at Brain Wash Cafe & Laundromat, or fix your motorbike over breakfast at MotoJava. If I ever move to New York, I'll try the Ribs, Oil & Filter Special at Mogridder's in Bronx, NY. What do you think of multifunctional restaurants? Is it brilliant to be able to hit two birds with one stone? Or should restaurants be focused solely on their core competency: food?

I think some of them are great ideas, like the laundromat/cafe. It gives people something to do while they're doing a chore.
1Yeah in college we had a laundromat/bar..it was amazing! But the booze with the laundry can be a problem if you're not paying attention, like a stray red sock in a load full of whites!
2Love the laundromat/cafe! We call it a "washeteria."
3Some concepts are certainly better than others. Clothes and booze seem to be a natural:-)
4I don't know...sometimes, it'd be nice to have food available when you're doing other things. Our campus library had a cafe downstairs so you could eat and study at the same time...it was wildly popular. A snack bar/cafe is kind of a good idea for a laundromat too, because most people are there for several hours at a time. But a REAL restaurant should probably focus solely on food and not try to incorporate other things into it.
5I still don't know what to think of the flu shots-wine combo. Something about it just seem wrong to me!
