While one fast food chain is temporarily closing stores, another has begun remodeling them. Hoping a facelift will invigorate sales, Burger King announced a major effort to redesign its 12,000 worldwide locations.
Burger King is betting that rotating red flame chandeliers, LCD menus, and corrugated metal and brick walls will encourage customers to sit down and enjoy a meal rather than simply passing through.
According to Chairman and CEO John Chidsey, who describes the overhaul as "contemporary, edgy, futuristic . . . like an upscale restaurant," the 60 outlets that have already been revamped have generated 12 to 15 percent more sales.
The "20/20" design transformation, as it's called, is a huge risk for Burger King. The overhaul will take several years to complete worldwide, and will cost franchisees a whopping $300,000 to $600,000 per restaurant. Check out new store pictures. Could a redesign coax you into buying more BK?

The Body Shop
I will have to give them a try!
1A makeover definitely wouldn't hurt. Most of the Burger Kings I see are dingy and gross. I can't remember the last time I ate inside one.
2I actually ate a Burger King today and commented to my husband how outdated it was. The owner was actually talking to designers but I had no idea that corporate announced these changes at the time.
3Why would ANYONE eat in a burger king? The high-calorie, fat-laden food is bad for your arteries, will make you obese and more prone to diseases from acne to heart attacks. No amount of "modernization" will change that. They are gasping at straws. Fast food, especially hamburgers, are an idea whose time has passed. When the public wakes up to what is being done to them in the next five-ten years, BK, MacDonalds, Wendy's etc. will all go the way of the dinosaurs. "You can put lipstick on a pig, but you still can't take her to a dance."
4I hate BK regardless (and not for the health mumbo jumbo i just think they're gross). I guess this will make them less painful to look at.
5I eat at restaurants for the food, not for the decor. I wouldn't eat BK no matter where it was sold from.
6if they make improvements to the food i'd eat there more but i don't think they compare to mcdonalds or wendy's...i don't eat fast food a lot but on the off chance i do stop in on a road trip or something, i would never choose BK
7upscale restaurant HAHAHAHAHAH
8It feels like Burger King is going the way of Hardee's. The only one around here (located next to the hospital, ironically) is now advertising a bologna sandwich on its marquee.
9I'd rather drive the mile to Sonic's.
BK has so many folks that really don't like them for one reason or another. I wonder why they don't poll more and give people what they want. Doesn't that make good sense?
10I wouldn't eat it (I don't eat it now), but I wouldn't mind going in just to see how they've changed the decor.
11Don't most people go drive thru anyways? I can't remember the last time I went isnisde.
Things BK should attempt to do first:
121. Fix the food
2. Bring back honey as a condiment
