The Food Network will soon be getting a little sister. Yesterday, Scripps Networks Interactive announced it plans to launch another culinary channel next year to replace lifestyle channel Fine Living, or FLN. The new network, to be called the Cooking Channel, will debut in the Fall of 2010.
A third of FLN's programming is already food-related, but according to a release, the new channel will become a 24-hour network focusing on "food information and instructional cooking programming," as well as "food origins, culture, and history."
Scripps, which owns Food Network, Fine Living, HGTV, and DIY networks, certainly seems to be focusing more on food. At the beginning of this week, it publicized plans to expand Food Network to Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. What do you think of the corporation's newest venture? Does it sound redundant — or do you think it will be successful?

Sounds redudant, and what will they do with FLN's non food related shows?
1I will be the happiest woman in the world if I can get the Food Network in Norway. Right now all I get that is close to the FN is Discovery Travel & Living and it sucks.
2It does seem a bit redundant to me too. They already have the Food Network and there are several other channels (like Bravo) with cooking shows on them.
3Who do I need to write to to get Sandra Lee kicked off the air?
4The market is flooded with food programs. They to not need to have another network that focuses on Food. The Foodnetwork is doing a good Job.
5This reminds me of when MTV started MTV2 so that they had a place to actually show videos. Many years later i'm not sure you can actually see videos on MTV2 anymore either.
Food Network has gone downhill in my opinion, in that it seems more sensationalized and less on actually learning things. This sounds like it would be pretty cool I'd give it a chance, but i'm not holding my breath.
6If this means that they'll show more episodes of original Iron Chef per day, then I'm all for it. I'd love for that show to get its original soundtrack back, but I can't have everything.
7FLN takes alot of HGTV shows and shows reruns of the biggest loser anyway. I love food and I love watching it being made.
8It sounds just like Food Network...
9Can't wait! It's coming to the UK on Sky by the end of this year! I've missed you so much Food Network.
10For the past year FLN has seriously fallen off. I used to love this channel when they had shows about vacation destinations, personal finance, and actual lifestyle programming. Now they just show reruns of shows I never watched when they originally aired. Making it another channel about food is a waste.
