I've never been to Japan, but with all of the crazy Japanese food circulating the web these days, I can't help but want to experience these interesting dishes first hand. After pizzas loaded with every topping imaginable, bento boxes turned works of art are the next most popular craze. Take the one pictured at right, how cool would it be if you opened your lunch-box to find an edible Hello Kitty??? The rice body and corn button nose are just too cute for words. I'm not sure if you can order these babies at Pizza Hut, but I double dare you to recreate one at home! Share the process and final products on TeamSugar so we can all learn how to make edible masterpieces.

1Is she dressed up like a bunny?
2That is so cute! someone spent too much time making it though haha
3I could never eat Hello Kitty!
4Why didn't I get lunches like this in grade school?
5Too adorable, but I agree with geeksugar. Eating Hello Kitty is almost worse than eating a real kitty.
6(My cats are glaring at me.)
that is soo cute but um... its almost a sin to eat her nooo!!!!
7Omg that is way too cute to eat!
8So cute! I couldn't eat her either!
9I couldn't eat her, either!
10I could, but then again I eat the heads off of animal crackers first.
11cute, but it doesn't look like it's taste very good
12Let me at it.

16I would never be able to eat it!!!! I love and collect Hello Kitty. I have and refuse to eat my HK wafer, cookies, and marshmallow candy.
17That is so dang cute! I wouldn't want to eat it, though.
18EEEE!
19I LOVE it.
(wondering if I could do that myself...)
Way too cute!!! I'm obsessed with anything Hello Kitty.
20That is too adorable.
I love bento boxes (I'm eating my lunch out of one right now), but it's so much effort to make it look artistic! I'm usually far too concerned with it tasting all right to bother making it look nice too.
21It looked sweet but if you look closer it is a vegetable plethora!
22haha aww cute
23That is really, really cute! And she's made of rice. Awww. I don't think I could eat it,
24Ahhh! I think I would be able to get over my initial squealing to start chomping down.
25Asian grocery stores often sell shaped molds for making o-nigiri (riceballs). I have some that are shaped like hearts and flowers, and even a couple hello-kitty shaped. You can also buy decorative cutters (they look like very small cookie cutters) in different shapes that you can use to make flowers, clouds, etc.)
I'll try to make a fancy bento sometime and send pictures.

Having the right dishes makes a big difference in how kawaii (cute) your bento is. You can get lots of great bento sets and accessories at Asian grocery stores too.

34That is so cute, it looks like a great way to learn kids to eat vegetables.
35Sooo cute!
36i've seen tonnes of hello kitty cookbooks at a japanese bookstore before. i seriously stood there flipping through them mesmerized by how much time & effort japanese moms put into making their children's lunch boxes. i went to elementary school with a japanese girl and her lunches always looked immaculate. maybe no hello kitty-shaped sandwiches, but still - amazing.
37I'd take pictures and then start chomping.
It's so cute.
