I love bananas so much that I have one every work day at 11:30am. If you love bananas as much as I do, then you'll be excited to know that today is National Banana Lover's Day! To celebrate, I've put together a few fun facts about bananas:
- The banana plant is not a tree. It's actually the world's largest herb!
- A banana plant may grow up to 30 feet in length with stems weighing up to 100 pounds.
- Bananas are native to Malaysia, and have been in existence for over 1 million years.
- Bananas were once considered a very exotic, hard to find fruit.
- Bananas were first sold in the United States in 1876 at the 100th anniversary party of the Declaration of Independence in Pennsylvania. They were wrapped in foil and cost only 10 cents.
- Today bananas are grown in 132 countries across the globe.
- The average person eats 33 pounds of bananas a year!

7Bananas don't have seeds. They must be grown from cuttings from the parent plant. The variety of banana that we eat in the U.S. is the cavendish. It is considered a dessert banana. (No wonder I like bananas so much.) The cavendish is actually in danger of dying out because of a banana disease. But not to worry! There are many, many, many varieties of bananas. Yes, we have no bananas!
8I love my bananas!
9They are such a convient, fast, and healthy snack when your on the go!
I always make sure to buy lots at the grocery store!
Lol @ banana day...I luv em. I add em to my cereal all the time...keeps me full 4 a long time. Is it just me or do the organic ones ripen alot faster?
10I love bananas. Sounds weird, but I love banana with white rice.
11The cavendish is the only banana grown commercially in the world, despite the many genetic varieties of bananas (that's why no matter where you go, all bananas look the same!) Due to this lack of genetic diversity, if a serious contagious disease that kills the cavendish comes along, that's it for our bananas. There was a great show on bananas shown last weekend here in the UK.
12There is a banana plant growing in the old market in Omaha, NE. It snows here. Weird!
13A banana tree only produces one bunch in its lifetime. After that, its cut down.
14I learned this from a visit to St. Lucia, so I don't know what type of banana they were talking about.
Best on cereal. When I was young my grandmother would give us bananas, covered with sugar and half and half.
15mmmm bananas. i only get the fair trade ones and organic ones which means i don't eat them as often as you do Yum (since they are a bit harder to find that way), but i do love them a lot!
