Yesterday in the office kitchen, TrèsSugar, Fab, and I got into a discussion about durian, the controversial-smelling Southeast Asian fruit. Très loves it, but Fab said she simply can't get over the smell. The whole discussion got me thinking about olfactory offenses in the kitchen. Personally, I can't stand the sulfurous smell of eggs. What odors can't you handle?

you all have new avatars!! nice! I'd say tuna and anchovies. The smell is definitely off putting.
the new avatars are creepy IMO
I hate the smell of black eye peas cooking.
BBBBBBB.........broccoli...
fish, something rotten in the garbage or fridge (LOL)
Papayas. For some reason they smell like fresh vomit to me.
I love cabbage and brussels sprouts, but the smell of them cooking lingers for WAY too long. Ugh.
I'm with you on the eggs, but it depends... a coworker was eating a boiled egg nearby and the smell grossed me out, but if I'm eating the eggs myself, it doesn't bother me. Also, I remember sitting next to someone on a plane that was eating Burger King burgers and the smell made me nauseous... but normally it doesn't bother me? I guess it depends on the situation.
Otherwise, I really hate the smell of anise, for some reason.
beef stew smells like dog food to me
Microwave Butter Popcorn - I can't stand that smell ...
Overcooked food like broccoli, brussel sprouts cabbage and eggs. The fish smell after eating dinner. Certain hot sauces make me nauseous.
Raw chicken, mayo, or cabbage (I love cabbage, but hate the smell)
I find the smell of a rabbit being cooked horrible as well as wet dog- & cat-food.
I second Fab's vote - I cannot stand durian!
Calamari! I hate when people order it because I gag all the way to their table lol.
onlysourcherry - you're right, especially tinned stew (like Chunky)... when you first open it the smell is exactly like Alpo, yyyuck!
chiefdishwasher: broccoli has a smell?? ... Now that onlysourcherry described it that way, I will never be able to smell tinned stew again!
Fish. It smells just as bad while cooking as it does rotting on the beach.
I don't have too many food smell aversions, although like shiningeyes said, it depends on the situation and my mental state. If I'm anxious about something and it's too early in the morning, the smell of pancakes/syrup/waffles makes me nauseous, even though I like them very much otherwise. Sometimes happens with other things too.
Otherwise, I have trouble with some of the things my dad likes to cook for himself (recipes from the 'old country') like tripe and liver. Gah. When I lived with my parents and they made those things, I'd usually have to leave the house for a few hours. Thankfully they didn't do it too often.
Roasted pheasant or duck.
microwaved fish. I worked someplace and there was a rule that fish was not allowed in the microwave.
The smell of syrup makes me gag. I cant stand to be near it.
maybe I meant the other B smell......brussel sprouts are nasty!
Fish sauce.
Any time I make bleu cheese sauce, it grosses me out because it smells like sweat and vomit combined. I also hate the smell of cooked liver, so I never make that on purpose. I also do NOT like the smell of fish cooking; it smells like stinky cat food.
yogurt. ick!
mayo and celery!
Any seafood.
I have no idea how this regional dish didn't enter my mind immediately...Lutefisk. I can't even begin to describe the stench. Truly, truly horrific.
For those curious about lutefisk, here is a link. Because this article is really as close to the stuff as anyone should get. The humorous quotes near the end of the page--Garrison Keillor's in particular--are painfully funny!

I cannot stand the smell of bacon or sausage. Ewe.
I don't like the smell when someone is cooking pigs feet or chitlings.
Even before they're cooked they both smell awful. I could never eat that mess.
I like YumSugar's new look! She looks sassy
the morning after throwing a raw chicken bone in the trash. YUCK!! I just want to throw the garbage out the window!
bacon and boxed yellow cake mix in the oven.
Doritos! Barf!!
Thanks PinkNC! And I coudn't agree more about the fish sauce!
oh, and stale french fries
Fish sauce, shrimp paste, liver pate`, cauliflower, menudo
Ditto on the fresh papaya, yuck! Also movie popcorn & curry of any type, too.
The only food smells I find repulsive are rotten food smells, which shouldn't really count. I never like the neighbors' cooking smells. Either everything smells really good and you're sad you're not making that, or it smells horrible and stinks up the hall for days.
I hate garlic breath. It's not ok to have that smell on your breath especially because it lingers for so long even with the use of so called remedies.
Anise, nutmeg, and cloves. If i have to use pumpkin pie/apple pie spice, i will just use cinnamon. the smell of cloves and whatnot are repulsive!
tuna and cauliflower.
