In this economy, even the savviest of fast food diners have a hard time stretching their dollar. But if the rumors are true, value-seekers may soon find it a lot easier to fill up for a buck early in the day. According to the Chicago Tribune and the Wall Street Journal, McDonald's plans to reveal a nationwide breakfast dollar menu.
Based on internal documents obtained by the two publications, the McDonald's breakfast dollar menu will begin a national advertising run in January 2010. Although McDonald's has declined to comment, the burger giant tested a breakfast menu with $1 items in August in its Chicago stores, offering items such as a sausage McMuffin, breakfast burritos, and hash browns.
The chain, which is also rolling out the Mac Snack Wrap nationwide in January, will face some stiff competition.
Burger King recently added the quarter-pound Double Cheeseburger to its menu through March, and Dunkin' Donuts just rolled out a temporary $0.99 menu in Chicago. If two leading newspapers are publishing stories on it, the alleged menu can't be too far from the truth. What would you hope to see on a $1 breakfast bonanza?

YaY!
1I don't know if it was just in the MD/DC/VA area, but I'm pretty sure we've had a breakfast dollar menu for at the very least, a year now. My favorite is the 2 hash browns for $1... I can't get enough of my deep fried starches!
2My stomach would hate me if I ate McDonald's for breakfast. Ugh.
3After working the 5am-1pm shift at McD's when I was in HS and having to eat more breakfast burritos and hash browns than I care to admit, I will never eat at McD's for breakfast ever again.
4The only time you will ever see my eating at a fastfood restaurant for breakfast, is if I'm heading on a trip somewhere, which isn't that often, so I always head for Burger King's breakfast. Mmm those croissants are something else.
5McGriddles, McMuffins, and Hasbrowns! Oh my!
6The first anon commenter is right - McD's has had dollar-priced breakfast menus for a long time now. Maybe they got bumped up a few cents over the past year or so, like the double cheeseburger did, and now they're back down, but those menu items aren't really newly priced.
I'm not a McD's addict, I just used to work there and got to be good friends with their pricing.
7Their 2 for 2 breakfast is okay but it has to be what THEY choose for the week. Yes, they should have started a permanent $1 breakfast menu a long time ago.
And I noticed the other day that Wendy's $1 menu has gone down. They took a lot of items off. So now you have less to choose from on the $1 menu.
