Heirloom
A term that is used to describe a number of plants grown from a certain seed variety. These seed varieties are grown without any human intervention and must be at least 50 years old. In the purest sense it is a plant that has been selected, nurtured, and handed down from one family member to another for generations resulting in a highly flavorful produce. In the food world it most commonly refers to tomatoes, but can also refer to corn, watermelon, squash, etc.

I've never had them, do Heirloom Tomatoes taste different? Sweeter? Firmer? Better for cooking? I'd like to try them out but know nothing about them.
1there are many different kinds of heirloom tomatoes. Some are firmer, some are softer, some are sweet, some not so. It depends on the variety. A lot of grocery stores carry them these days (usually only during peak months), so go ahead and experiment! Here's a pretty good list of heirloom tomato varieties to get you started.
2i love heirloom tomatoes! Heirloom tomato salad with balsamic vinegar...yummy!
3Great with a little salt and pepper, or an aged balsamic.
4I love heirloom tomatoes! You can DEFINITELY taste the difference. YUM!
5Thanks for the link, Yum! At the grocery I go to they are all just in one bin so I never know how to approach it. I'll have to give some a try soon!
6Interesting, I've only heard of heirloom tomatoes, nice to know the real meaning, Yum.
7These delights are in season right now, and soooo gorgeous! I wish I had a good recipe to use them for, maybe a basic yet delish Caprese...
8dcstar - for me, the only thing a perfectly ripe tomato needs is a little salt and pepper. although being integrated into a caprese salad is the next best option!
