You may not be overcome with excitement, but today is National Apple Dumpling Day. Dumplings are an incredibly old food known to cooks in many countries, cuisines, and cultures. Simply put, a dumpling is a globular mass of boiled, steamed dough filled with meat, vegetables, or fruit. The apple dumpling is a traditional dessert native to the Pennsylvanian Amish who eat them for breakfast. I'll confess, I've never had an apple dumpling, but today I just might seek one out in order to celebrate and experience a new type of dumpling. How about you, have you ever had apple dumplings? If so, what do you think of them?

I've had apple dumplings before. They offer them at Cracker Barrel. I think they pretty much taste like apple pie. It's just softer in texture. It's pretty good.
1I've never had one before..but that picture looks yummy...Yumsugar, do you have a recipe to make Apple Dumplings..or does anyone here have one?
2i LOVE apple dumplings!! My roommate/best friend makes them and they are so good! I ask for them for my birthday every year!
you've never had one partysugar?! oh my god...they are so good! he (my roommate) bakes them
together in a pan and it is such a gooey, yummy mess!
3i don't have my recipe here for the kind we make, but ours do not look like above - lots of sauce over all the dumplings in the pan and you must eat it in a bowl, maybe with vanilla ice cream! oh yummmy...
46 Apples, peeled and cored
Lemon juice
1/2 c White sugar, approx
1 ts Cinnamon
Brown sugar
Butter
2 Pie pastry for 2 pies
Sugar sauce:
2 c Water
3/4 c Sugar
2 ts Vanilla
2 tb Butter
1/4 ts Nutmeg
1/4 ts Mace
Instructions
1. Roll out pastry and cut into squares enough to cover apples completely. Peel and core apples. Roll in lemon juice. Then roll in white sugar and cinnamon combined. Place on pastry square. Stuff core cavity with brown sugar, butter, brown sugar in equal parts. (The amount depends on size of core cavity, just stuff full.) Fold pastry up around apple to completely enclose it. Place in pan. Prepare sugar sauce by mixing water, sugar, vanilla, butter, nutmeg, and mace and boiling for 1 minute. Let cool slightly. Pour over Apples. Bake in 375 F oven for 1 hour. Serve warm. Note: Apples may be frozen in pastry (before sugar sauce is added) if desired. Good dessert to make ahead if you have lots of apples around. Just let thaw when ready to use, and cover with sugar sauce and bake as usual.

5I love apple dumplings! That is my favorite dessert at our country club, warm apple dumpling a la mode, just a perfect blend of flavors after a good meal.
I have thought of making them with my newfound baking skills, but I'm still waiting on my recently ordered apple peeler to get here before I go nuts with the apple recipes!
Now I really want one though!
6I have never had them or made them. They look good though!
7Never had one either but it sounds yummy. Gotta love the
8Apple dumplings rule and the Amish rule. Greatest jams and baked goods ever. Only in competition with Linvilla Orchards for my affections.
9sounds great! I would rather have apples+pastry any day over chocolate anything.
10Makes me think of that hilarious movie, the Apple Dumpling Gang. LOL! I've never had an apple dumpling but I should give it a try.
11Thanks krisfl...I am going to try it tonight!
12Apple Dumplings are so delicious. I love the way my mom makes them. It would be great to have one right now. Since I have a sweet tooth at this moment.
13I just started to make them about a few weeks ago for the first time. I picked apples at this great farm and didn't want them to go to waste since I had so many. I found a really good recipe from September's issue of Martha Stewart. The apples are cored and filled with raspberry jam, pecans and brown sugar. YUM!
I then make my own whipped cream and it is sooo delightful!! They're yummy for breakfast too!
14Apple cider doughnuts are also lovely and autumnal. you have find plenty of recipes (both full and low-fat) if you google it.
15I don't think I've ever had apple dumplings, but that one in the pic is beautiful!
16make the recipe tht uses crescent rolls and moutain dew - those are delicious! and will be taken to my Bible Study group tonight-
