Marilyn Mansinthe

In a "hmmm... surprised this didn't happen sooner" moment, Marilyn Manson will continue to perpetuate his gothic identity by releasing his own line of absinthe called "Mansinthe."

The family-run distillery Matter-Luginbuehl will collaborate with Manson in order to produce thousands of bottles for a worldwide audience. Manson hasn't visited the distillery — which is located in the rural Swiss village of Kallnach — but decided on them after tasting several different absinthes brought by distillery partner Markus Lion.

"The collaboration first arose when Lion asked Manson if he would design a label for one of his absinthe bottles, following a concert by the star in the Swiss city of Basel some two years ago."

The partnership makes sense to me, after all, everything Manson touches seems to turn goth, so I guess it's only appropriate that anything associated with goth turns to Manson. I'm just surprised it didn't happen sooner.

One bottle will be 66.6% proof and will cost 49 Swiss francs (41 dollars, 30 euros) at the distillery's online shop. It initially will not be available in the US (pesky laws!) and most of the exports are for Australia, Britain, France, Germany, Greece and Italy.

What do you guys think of it? Do you think it's a fun idea? Or do you think it's totally tired?

I avoid celebrity branded stuff like the plague. However, if he can get the brand distributed throughout the United States, I'd give it a try just because I've always wanted to taste absinthe out of pure curiosity.

Now if only Lucid Absinthe would branch out further than New York...

Too bad real absinthe is illegal in the US. The stuff bought there doesn't have the wormwood in it, thus not real absinthe. After all what's the point of drinking absinthe if there's no threat of going insane.

Oh, and Manson isn't a goth. He's shock rock.

i like my absinthe with a sugar cube, not with a lame celebrity endorsement.

I'm not a bit surprised by this. Coming from a celebrity, it is different because he's endorsing something edible.

I've never heard of absinthe. But anything associated with him-no thanks.

It would be so much cooler if he didn't put his name on the label. What's next Cheetos flavored baby food by Britney?

First, I don't know that the world needs anything that extends Marilyn Manson's brand. His original oddness was one thing, but his latest antics are just repelling.

Second, I think it's a disservice to the fringe liqueur that its introduction to "popular" potable culture in the U.S. will be via a persona that is so fringe itself. Absinthe could be associated with Bohemian Paris, or wonderful cocktails by Peter the Head Barman at the American Bar at the Savoy in London ... why any distributor would think Marilyn Manson is the way to go is beyond me!

I think if Danny DeVito can sell Limoncello, Marilyn Manson ought to have some success with Absinthe. He's a notorious absinthe drinker, so maybe people will assume that he's put his name on the best. Who knows!

Absinthe with wormwood is no longer illegal in the United States, but it has to meet some strict standards. There is already one real absinthe brand on the market in New York: http://www.drinklucid.com/
