yup - I use it for grinding nuts, flax seeds, making extra fine sugar or salt out of the regular kind. I don't have a coffee grinder and putting stuff in a zip-lock and smashing away doesn't
work for everything.
I use mine for smashing garlic just like Mom taught me. A couple of cloves of fresh garlic, some kosher salt and we're on our way to making marinara much more memorable.
when I want to make special salts I use these. For instance I was making a mole and I wanted to carry the peanut into every aspect of the dish, I had large kosher salt and ground it with a
couple of peanuts and sprinkled it over the chicken mole dish.
I just bought one I love. here's the bookmark to it. I use it to make my salad dressing. I also use it to gring up whole spices,
including the corriander seeds i just grew
that looks like the one i had from IKEA. i accidentally broke the pestle before we moved so i need to buy a new set. i want a marble one next. we use the set all the time for spices, of
course and other stuff
Oh, yes I use it (them)! It's a marble one. Mostly for my Mojo (Rojo). Sometimes I'm
afraid that I will drop it, and it will destroy my feet because of its heavyness.
Having one of these is essential for great indian cooking - I use mine to ground up whole garam masala, allowing for much fresher taste than just using pre ground.
It's also great for making spice rubs and such that contain things like whole garlic cloves.
I have a nice heavy granite one. I use it almost everyday to grind up fresh garlic and ginger for Indian cooking. I like grinding up my garlic for my everyday cooking (mainly Italian and
Indian) because not everyone likes chunks of garlic in their food. This way they get the fresh taste without the big pieces.
when i saw thw title mortar and pestle i thot u meant the african one? wish u were talkin abt the african one..its bigger and wooden, maybe i shud send you a pic wud you like that yum sugar?
I most certainly do use a mortar and pestle -- but never in the kitchen. I'm a chemist and I use it to grind up drugs before injecting them into mice. Somehow, I don't think that's the way
you had in mind....

This soup ends up being a good source of three blood pressure-lowering minerals since the milk adds calcium and the potatoes deliver a dose of potassium, as well as magnesium.
a coffee grinder works better.
1I used to - to grind too chunky henna when I did my own designs.
2I'd like to get one for smaller jobs that a coffee grinder doesn't really work for.
3I used to have one, but very rarely used it... so it didn't survive the last move.
4I do not have one

11Yes, I own one. Growing up, we always had one in the house for grinding spices like whole cumin.
12I used to love playing with them when I was a kid (I was easily entertained, apparently) but I don't think I've ever actually used one for cooking

22I use mine for garlic and fresh pepper. It also works well for grinding up pills if you have a child who hates to take them whole!
