Although they are messy and difficult to eat, caramel apples are super easy to make! All you do is jam a stick into the apples and dip them into melted caramel squares.
This nostalgic dessert is a fabulous way to welcome the arrival of October, and would be fun to make with kids. It takes at least an hour for the caramel to harden, so make these apples in advance. Get the scrumptious recipe when you read more

2 pounds lady apples or tart apples, such as Macouns or Winesaps
1 pound caramel squares
10 wooden sticks
- Wash and completely dry the apples. Insert a wooden stick into thetop end of each. Line a baking sheet with wax paper and set aside.
- In a small saucepan over low heat, combine the caramels with 1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons water. Cook until smooth, stirring occassionally, about 10 minutes. Remove from heat.
- While the caramel is hot, dip the apples in, swirling to coat evenly. Let the excess caramel drip off and place the apples on the lined baking sheet. Place in the refrigerator to harden, about 1 hour.
Makes 10 apples.

28i just made these for a potluck my class had, they were a huge hit!!! i use microwaveable caramel, and had help, you have to work really fast because the caramel hardens again so quickly, making it a two person operation definitely helped!! melting the caramels on the stove i guess you wouldn't have that problem...but, they were absolutely delicious anyway!!!
29You guys and gals, I have found the most amazing candy store that sells many different kinds of caramel apples. It's called the Rocky Mint Chocolate Factory located on Jefferson St. in San Francisco. It's by Fisherman's Wharf. Anyhoo, I got their "apple pie" caramel apple. Sooo good. They also have a them coated in different kinds of nuts (walnut, peanut, almond, etc.), coconut, "cheesecake", and many others. If you are in San Francisco during the fall be sure to stop by and get your caramel apple fix!
30Sorry. Apparently it is Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory in San Francisco between Embarcadero North St & Mason St.
