Earlier this week, I gave you guys a recipe for a cookie full of Snickers candies, which is what I dreamt of every time folks would mention snickerdoodles. Well, a few of you wrote in to ask exactly what a snickerdoodle was. Simply put, a snickerdoodle is a type of soft sugar cookie, dusted with cinnamon and sugar. They're usually a little crunchy on top, and soft and chewy in the middle.
Some folks think the name comes from the corruption of the German word schneckennudeln — a type of cinnamon-dusted sweet roll — but no one is really sure. No matter where its name comes from, it's definitely a cookie worth trying, and one to keep in your cookie repertoire. For a classic recipe, read more

1Yay!
2Oh I love these. My inlaws owned their own cookie business and I would help out there a lot and they made all kinds of home made cookies and snickerdoodles was one of them. They owned a popular chain. They sold the business a couple of years ago and I miss it.
3Oh man I love snickerdoodles. They're the first cookie I made myself!
4I fricking love Snickerdoodles! The first time I had one it was from a sweet shop called Chocolate Factory. Now I can make my own!
5I love snickerdoodles. They are so good. The perfect cookie, aside from a chocolate chip cookie!
6Not to be a geek, but I don't see how snickerdoodle could come from schneckennuddeln bc Nuddeln is the German word for noodles. (and Schnecke is the German word for snail, but I've heard of different desserts with that word in it)
But I guess I'll
have to ask my German host family and see what they can tell me.
7Ahhhh Snickerdoodles!!! I was so excited to see them profiled here.
My family gets upset if I don't make them during the holidays. lol
A couple of tips regarding the recipe. IMHO, bring eggs and butter to room temperature before starting to mix them with the sugar. Also thoroughly mixing the dry ingredients (((flour, cream of tartar, salt and baking soda))) together first in a separate bowl then adding it slowly to the wet ingredients (((sugar, eggs and butter))) helps the cookies rise and get that nice crispy top on them. I might have to bake some this weekend. *drifts away dreamily*
8Boy, do these bring back my childhood! My older sister learned to bake these in Home Ec. and she's baked them regularly ever since. Mmmm, the smell of them baking!!
