It's my grandfather's birthday this week and I'm in charge of making him a fabulous cake. I've never baked with a cake mold, but they're super trendy right now, and I thought it would be fun to experiment. Unfortunately, I don't own a single cake mold so I asked you to help me find one. You searched the web for a dishwasher-safe cake mold with a creative and original shape. You saved them in the Yum Market on TeamSugar with the keyword tag Cake Mold.
Some of the choices are better for little kids, so for my grandfather I'd like to use this fun cascade shaped pan. Aimeeb bookmarked this under $30 pan.
Now that I have the pan, I'll have to figure out how to decorate the cake. This shape lends itself to an endless number of possibilities, does anyone have any suggestions?
Geeksugar has put together an explanation on how to bookmark stuff from the web.

1Glad I could help!!!
2what kind of cake are you going to bake? if the one in the picture ... chocolate ganache glaze could be enough for grandfather.
3I love cake pans! Good choice!
4I love the giant cupcake! Its so cute!
5You could use powdered sugar to make the cake look like snow covered mountains. Or you could use colored sugar to make it look like a sand castle or something from the beach.
6I have a Hansel and Gretl cake mold from Williams-Sonoma that has similar peaks and points to the cake mold pictured above. All I have to say is that you have to be very picky about what kind of cake you make in this kind of mold. I tried making some standard cakes, and the mold just couldn't handle it. The only way I could get it to work well was with a pound cake type batter. It filled out the details perfectly and was strong enough to maintain the peaks. (It's kind of counterintuitive- you'd think a lighter, fluffy cake would work best...)
7I love the railway cake pan! I'm concerned though that the more intricate they become, the less frosting you can put on them and what is a cake without frosting. Seriously.
8Love the cupcake - too cute!
9I've wanted the William-Sonoma one that looks like a stadium for a while. I just can't jusify it.
10I'm thinking that if your grampa likes lemon, you can make a lemon pound cake in there and drizzle it with a lemon icing.
11It reminds me of a mum.
You could glaze it with lemon glaze and pipe around the edges?
You could make the cake be center of a flower. Place the cake on an oversized board with frosting 9or maybe just petty paper) petals extending from the cake.
12I dunno. I'm reaching here.
I love these molds, but I can't justify buying one either. Still, some of them are fabulous!
